Yes—but Google Drive is storage, not a live-stream source. To broadcast a Drive video continuously, an encoder must retrieve the file, play or loop it, and send the resulting live feed to YouTube. YouTube’s documentation describes this encoder-to-ingestion workflow, not a native direct connection from a Drive file or sharing link to YouTube Live.
How the Drive-to-YouTube workflow works
Think of the setup as three separate jobs: Drive holds the source video, a player and encoder turn it into a continuous audiovisual feed, and YouTube receives that feed at its live ingestion endpoint.
- Make the video readable. The account or application running the encoder needs permission to download or otherwise access the Drive file. Google’s Drive API supports downloading file content with authorized access; browser downloads are also available to users who have download permission. A sharing link alone is not proof that a particular encoder can fetch the file.
- Play and loop the video. Use a player/encoder workflow that can play the file and continue looping or scheduling it. The exact way to access a Drive file depends on the chosen software and the file’s permissions; Google’s and YouTube’s documentation does not certify a particular player’s ability to retrieve and loop Drive-hosted content.
- Send the encoder output to YouTube. Configure the encoder with YouTube’s ingestion address and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live streaming. The Drive file itself is not the live feed.
Google’s YouTube Live API guide uses a channel with a 24/7 live feed as an example of its broadcast model. That example establishes that continuous broadcasts are a supported use case, not that any individual computer, internet connection, or channel will stay online without interruption.
Set up and test the stream
Check access to the source file
- Confirm the video plays and can be downloaded by the same account or service the encoder will use.
- If access depends on sign-in or an authorization token, check how the encoder handles that access and whether it remains valid during a long broadcast.
- Test the exact file and access method. The official documentation does not guarantee that an arbitrary Drive sharing URL can be opened by every encoder.
Configure YouTube ingest
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps in its standard encoder settings, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Consult YouTube’s settings page for the bitrate recommendation for your chosen resolution; do not assume one bitrate suits every format or quality level.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the ingestion endpoint and stream key shown for your YouTube broadcast. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
Check channel eligibility and content rights
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to live stream. Before broadcasting, also make sure you have the necessary rights to every video and audio track in the loop. A video being stored in your Drive does not establish permission to broadcast it. Copyright claims or restrictions can affect a live broadcast.

Test the whole chain before leaving it unattended
- Start a test with the actual Drive account, source file, player, encoder, network, and YouTube stream key you plan to use.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring audio and video quality.
- Listen for gaps, clipping, silence, or unexpected transitions when the file loops. Confirm the loop continues rather than stopping at the end of the file.
- Keep the encoder device awake and the source accessible for the full run. Decide how someone will notice and recover from a stopped player, expired access, encoder crash, or network outage.
Plan for bandwidth and continuity
YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, if the configured stream sends at a total of 10 Mbps, plan for at least 12 Mbps of available upload capacity under the relevant operating conditions. This is a recommendation for bandwidth margin, not a promise of uninterrupted service.
A local setup depends on the complete chain remaining healthy: Drive access, playback, encoder, power, and internet connection. Computer sleep or restart, a revoked permission, expired authentication, player failure, or a network disruption can stop the source or transmission. For a 24/7 channel, arrange a way to monitor the broadcast and a recovery procedure; the 24/7 example in Google’s API guide is not an uptime guarantee.

Choose how the encoder gets the Drive video
| Approach | What it involves | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Download or stage the file locally | Use authorized Drive access to download the video to the machine running playback and encoding. | Confirm there is enough local storage and that the downloaded copy is the one you intend to broadcast. |
| Fetch through an authenticated application | Have software retrieve the file using authorized access rather than relying on a manually downloaded copy. | Verify that the chosen player can access the file and keep authorization valid. The official documentation does not certify a particular encoder integration. |
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming; its guidance does not say that a dedicated hardware encoder is required for a pre-recorded loop. A software encoder may suit an operator who can maintain the computer and network. Hardware is an optional approach, not a guarantee of compatibility with Drive or of uninterrupted streaming.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The player cannot open the Drive video | The file is private, the account lacks download access, or the encoder cannot use the sharing URL or authentication method. | Test download/playback using the encoder’s account and verify permissions. Try an authorized local download if the workflow supports it. |
| The broadcast starts but stops when the video ends | The playback workflow is not configured to loop or schedule another file. | Test end-of-file behavior and confirm continuous playback before relying on the stream. |
| YouTube does not receive a stream | The ingestion address, stream key, encoder output, or network path may be incorrect or unavailable. | Recheck the endpoint and key in YouTube, encoder protocol settings, and the Live Control Room preview. |
| Video or audio quality is unstable | Insufficient upload capacity, unsuitable encoder settings, or a disrupted connection may be responsible. | Check stream health and encoding settings; leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom and monitor audio and video. |
| The stream fails after running for a while | Possible causes include computer sleep/restart, encoder failure, network loss, or expired/revoked Drive access. | Check device power settings, authorization, playback, and connectivity; define who or what will detect and restart the feed. |
