In an announcement published on 27 October 2024, PerthNow reported that the Perth International Jazz Festival (PIJF) had become the tenant of Mosman Park Memorial Hall, home of Camelot Cinema, and planned to revive the venue with cinema, live music and community events. That report described an intended return—not proof that the venue reopened as planned or remains open today.
What PIJF planned for Camelot
PIJF aimed to reactivate the hall as a cultural venue combining film screenings, performances and community events. Its opening-season plan included five nights of artists, which general manager Richard Evans said would help spread the word that “Camelot’s back open for business.” The planned opening performance was by Australian vocalist Holli Scott, described in the report as award-winning, presenting her album Weather and Weeds. These were plans reported in October 2024; the article does not establish which events ultimately took place. PerthNow’s announcement.

Grant and preparation of the hall
The Town of Mosman Park awarded PIJF a reported $40,000 grant in 2024 to help prepare the building. PIJF had initially sought $67,000, and Evans said he hoped sponsors and donors might help address the difference. The report does not identify any sponsors or confirm additional fundraising. The PerthNow report.
Evans described the community response as “very heartening” and said he wanted Camelot to become an iconic example of how councils could turn old town halls into cultural hubs. The report also quoted a Town statement saying the investment was important for public safety and the council’s aim to activate Memorial Hall. These statements set out the ambition for the project; they are not evidence of a completed refurbishment or a measured community impact.

Why the planned return was delayed
The season had been delayed while the hall went through an occupancy-permit process after parts of the building were found non-compliant. PerthNow described the hall as 104 years old at the time of publication and reported that a permanent permit was expected by the end of October 2024. It did not confirm that the permit was issued. The same report says the roof caved in in October 2022. PerthNow’s account of the permit and building.
What happened before PIJF’s plans
Luna Cinemas reportedly left Camelot after new noise restrictions were introduced following complaints from three neighbours. The report says outdoor screenings later resumed in February, with moviegoers wearing noise-cancelling headphones instead of relying on cinema speakers; it does not specify the year for those screenings. That account describes one response to noise concerns, not a measured assessment of its effectiveness or a guarantee that the same approach would be used under PIJF. PerthNow’s report on the previous operator and outdoor screenings.

Is Camelot Cinema open now?
The October 2024 announcement cannot establish Camelot Cinema’s current operating status, schedule, ticket availability or access arrangements. It reported a new tenant and an intended summer season, while the permanent permit was still expected rather than confirmed.
