Cake is a 2018 Pakistani family drama about estranged relatives brought back together as their aging parents need care. Its appeal rests on intimate family conflict, the performances of Sanam Saeed and Aamina Sheikh, and director Asim Abbasi’s interest in ageing and time—not on evidence that literally everybody praised it.
What is the Pakistani film Cake about?
Written and directed by Asim Abbasi, Cake follows family members whose estrangement is tested when they reunite to deal with the care of their aging parents. Sanam Saeed, Aamina Sheikh, and Adnan Malik are among the principal cast.
The premise gives the film a personal scale: the drama grows out of relationships and family responsibilities rather than a large public conflict. In a 2018 interview with The National, Abbasi said he wanted his first feature to have “universal appeal” and to explore family, ageing, and the passage of time. That is the director’s stated intention, not a claim that every viewer will interpret the film in the same way.
Why did the film attract praise?
A family story with emotional stakes
The central tension—how relatives respond when parents grow older and need care—offers a recognizable point of entry while keeping the story rooted in a specific family. The film’s subject is not simply ageing in the abstract; it is how time and responsibility affect relationships between people who have been apart.

Performances and a distinctive presentation
Saeed and Sheikh lead the family drama, with Malik also among the principal cast. A contemporary Express Tribune interview described the film as visually distinctive and discussed its deliberately mysterious title. Those features help explain the attention it received without implying universal agreement about its merits.
What the reviews actually show
The Guardian awarded the film four out of five stars. Reviewer Mike McCahill called it “an impressive debut from Asim Abbasi” and “even quietly revolutionary in places” in a March 29, 2018 review. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 90% Tomatometer, but that figure is based on just two critic reviews; it is a small aggregation, not a measure of audience satisfaction or proof of broad critical consensus (Rotten Tomatoes, accessed October 8, 2026). These sources support saying the film received favorable notices, not that “everybody” was raving about it.

Was Cake nominated for an Oscar?
No. In 2018, Pakistan’s Academy Selection Committee chose Cake as the country’s submission for consideration in the 91st Academy Awards’ Foreign Language Film category. A country’s submission is not the same as an Academy Award nomination. The contemporaneous Pakistan Press Foundation report describes the selection, while the Academy’s rules for the 91st Awards explain the national-submission process.
