What the guide covers
The six-chapter guide moves from learner orientation and examination-paper guidance to analysis, summaries, theme notes, and assessment practice. Study guide versus the play
| Resource | Purpose and format | Bibliographic details |
|---|---|---|
| DBE Mind the Gap guide | Downloadable study and examination-preparation resource | ISBN 978-1-4315-3377-0; DBE guide credits W. Tamsanqa, N. Dywili, and B. Dlungwana for the drama extracts |
| Oxford print edition of the play | Primary drama text; print edition listed by Oxford | ISBN 9780190411169; Oxford lists the author as W.K. Tamsanqa |

The DBE guide and the play have different ISBNs and purposes. Their author attributions also differ: the guide names the contributors to its extracts, while Oxford’s catalogue lists its play edition under W.K. Tamsanqa. Keep those descriptions attached to their respective sources rather than treating them as interchangeable bibliographic records.
How to use it for learning and teaching
For learners
- Read the play alongside the guide if you have access to the primary text; use the act summaries to check your understanding, not as a replacement for the drama.
- Work through the guide’s analysis categories, connecting plot events and dramatic choices to conflict, characterization, themes, setting, language, and the ending.
- Attempt the sample questions before consulting the example responses. Use the responses to assess how clearly you support an interpretation and address the question.
- Review the examination guidance and practise organising answers under timed conditions appropriate to your class or examination requirements.
For teachers
The DBE describes the guide as support for Grade 12 learners preparing for year-end examinations and says educators may use it as well. The Department’s Mind the Gap catalogue describes the series as supporting teacher development, direct learner support, and learning and teaching materials, with explanations of terminology and example examination questions and possible responses. Teachers can use its analysis framework to structure lessons, then adapt the sample questions to the class’s needs.
What the drama is about
Oxford’s publisher synopsis frames the drama around love and family relationships, including tension between traditional expectations and modern values, parental choices, and young people resisting coercion. The DBE guide’s title discussion says the phrase Buzani Kubawo signals dissatisfaction and a wish for a question to be put to the father. These are useful broad frames for reading the work; they should not be taken as a complete account of every character or theme.
