The Seattle International Film Festival lists the runtime as 108 minutes and describes the film’s techniques as archival footage, surreal animation, puppetry reenactments and interviews. Its interview list includes Richard Linklater, Dean Ween, Henry Rollins, Flea, Dave Grohl, Eric André, Ian MacKaye and Steve Albini. Those lists differ by source and should not be treated as a single definitive cast list. SIFF’s listing provides its runtime and description.
Why San Antonio is central to the band’s story
Haynes and Leary met at Trinity University in San Antonio in the late 1970s, according to the San Antonio Current’s 2025 report. Haynes became an accountant while Leary pursued an MBA. Leary left before finishing the degree and followed Haynes to California. After the two returned to San Antonio, they started an experimental rock band that would become the Butthole Surfers.

#1 Best Overall
The Current characterizes the band’s sound as post-punk noise, dark surreal humor and Texas psychedelia. It also reports that “Pepper,” from the 1996 album Electriclarryland, reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart. That chart position is the Current’s report; it is not independently rechecked here.
SIFF’s synopsis frames the origin story around two Trinity accounting students finding common ground in their strangeness and connecting with outsiders. In the Current, producer Noa Durban describes the band as a “safehaven for misfits, queers and artists amidst a generally unfriendly punk scene and political climate.”

The documentary’s San Antonio roots are documented, but the available sources do not verify a specific local event’s date, venue, ticket status or participants. Do not mistake screenings in other cities for a San Antonio date. For the event implied by a local announcement, confirm the organizer’s current listing or contact the venue directly before making plans.
The film’s official website has an “UPCOMING SCREENINGS” section and says more theaters may be added. Its listings include Houston, Tampa, Nashville, Cincinnati, Albuquerque and Arlington, but these are not evidence of a San Antonio screening. Dates and availability can change, so check the venue for showtimes, tickets, guest appearances or Q&A details. Visit the documentary’s official website.
Where to see The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt
The film had its world premiere at SXSW in March 2025. The San Antonio Current also reported an Austin Film Society screening on March 13, 2025; both are past events, not current local showtimes.
To find a current screening, start with the official movie site’s upcoming-screenings section, then verify details with the theater. Check the confirmed date and venue, whether tickets remain available, any advertised guests or Q&A, the runtime listed by that exhibitor, and accessibility information.
How the film tells the story
The project’s SXSW listing says: “Through exhaustive interviews, archival footage, cutting-edge animation and graphics, surreal reenactments, and more, we will make a film in the anarchic spirit of the band.” The combination of archival evidence and deliberately surreal visual techniques gives the documentary a way to address the band’s history without relying on conventional talking-head interviews alone.
