Spoilers for all six episodes of Butterfly, especially the finale. Rebecca survives David’s rescue, but the finale never confirms that she attacked Eunju or explains where she went. Eunju is found gravely injured, and Rebecca is missing. There will be no second season to resolve the cliffhanger: Prime Video canceled the series in October 2025.
What happens at the end of Butterfly Season 1?
David gets Rebecca away from Juno and Caddis. Although David is prepared to kill Juno, Rebecca persuades him to spare her, insisting that Juno stop threatening their family. Juno and Hollis escape South Korea.
Later, the family gathers for dinner. Eunju and Rebecca go to the bathroom together; afterward, David finds Eunju gravely injured and Rebecca gone. He asks Eunju whether Rebecca hurt her, but Eunju is too weak to answer.
The finale shows an attack and Rebecca’s absence, but not who attacked Eunju, why Rebecca is missing, or what happened to her after she left the scene. That distinction is the key to interpreting the last moments: the episode raises suspicion without resolving it. TIME’s August 13, 2025 finale breakdown likewise describes the ending as deliberately open.

What happened to Rebecca? Did she shoot Eunju?
The episode does not show Rebecca shooting or otherwise attacking Eunju. Rebecca is alive after David rescues her and is with the family before the final incident; when David finds Eunju, Rebecca is nowhere to be seen. Whether she fled, was taken, or had some role in the attack remains unknown.
Her decision to spare Juno makes her loyalties uncertain, but it is not proof that she returned to Juno’s side or harmed Eunju. Those are possible theories, alongside the possibility that someone else attacked Eunju or that Rebecca was abducted or framed. None is confirmed on screen. The most defensible reading is that the finale makes the family’s trust fragile again while withholding the answer about Rebecca.

Is Eunju alive at the end?
Eunju is gravely injured but apparently alive when David finds her. She cannot answer his question, and the finale does not reveal whether she recovers or what she might have witnessed. Her eventual outcome is not established by the episode.
What would Season 2 have addressed?
The finale leaves several story threads open: who attacked Eunju and whether she recovers; where Rebecca went and whether David can trust her; whether Juno and Caddis remain a danger after escaping; and whether the threats surrounding David’s extended Korean family continue. These are natural directions for a continuation, not a confirmed Season 2 synopsis.

Before the cancellation, Daniel Dae Kim told TIME: “We hope that there’s a second season. We wanted to end on an event that called into question all of the bonds that had been built over season one. David is trying to bring his family back together and we want to see him succeed in that attempt. And the end of Season 1 shows us that it’s not as easy as he thinks it’s going to be.” His comments describe the creative hope behind the cliffhanger, not an order for another season.
Will there be a Butterfly Season 2?
No. Marie Claire reported in October 2025 that Prime Video canceled Butterfly, so the show will not return for a second season. The questions about Eunju and Rebecca remain unanswered by the series.

How the show frames its family story
The spy plot is also a family drama: Rebecca’s choice to spare Juno and the final attack both complicate the trust David is trying to rebuild. Co-executive producer Ken Woodruff described the series to TV Insider as “a family drama set against a spy show.” Butterfly is adapted from BOOM! Studios’ graphic novel, but the comic is not established as an explanation for the television finale’s cliffhanger.
