Butterfly is a three-episode British drama about 11-year-old Max, who identifies as a girl and wants to live as Maxine. Its strongest material lies in the intimate, unsettled family around her: separated parents Vicky and Stephen take different approaches to supporting their child, while Maxine’s sister Lily offers a steadier source of connection. The series is compassionate and affecting, though some of its dramatic turns feel familiar.

What Butterfly is about

Created and written by Tony Marchant and directed by Anthony Byrne, Butterfly follows Maxine and her family across three episodes. Rather than treating transition as an abstract debate, the drama places it within ordinary family life: a child trying to live as herself, and parents who do not agree on how best to respond.

That focus gives the story emotional clarity. Vicky and Stephen’s separation already shapes the family, and their contrasting approaches add another fault line. The conflict is not simply a disagreement over policy; it affects how Maxine is heard and supported at home. The close focus makes the subject accessible without suggesting that one fictional family can stand for every transgender child or parent.

Performances make the family conflict personal

Callum Booth-Ford as Maxine

Callum Booth-Ford plays Maxine with the difficult task of keeping the character a child first, rather than reducing her to the issue around which adults argue. The story’s emotional force depends on the space it gives Maxine’s wishes and relationships amid her parents’ conflict.

#1 Best Overall

Anna Friel and Emmett J. Scanlan as the parents

Anna Friel’s Vicky and Emmett J. Scanlan’s Stephen give the drama its central tension. Their different responses make the dispute feel embedded in a strained relationship, not staged as a tidy contest between a right parent and a wrong one. This is where the series’ family scale helps: disagreement has consequences in the home, and support is shown as something lived out between people.

Millie Gibson as Lily

Millie Gibson’s Lily matters because Maxine’s world is not limited to the adults’ decisions. The Independent’s Sean O’Grady called the first episode “incredibly affecting” and singled out Lily’s support for Maxine. That is one critic’s response, not evidence of a broader audience consensus, but it points to a genuine strength of the sibling relationship in the story.

Compassion, with familiar dramatic touchstones

Lucy Mangan’s Guardian review captured the series’ balance: “While there is a sense of touchstones being arranged, Tony Marchant’s drama is delicate, compassionate and moving.” The familiar beats can make the family conflict legible, but they also keep parts of the story within recognizable television-drama patterns. At its best, Butterfly uses those patterns to make room for tenderness; at other moments, their predictability can make the drama feel less searching than its subject deserves.

The series’ intimate scale is both its strength and its limit. By concentrating on Maxine, her parents and Lily, it can make emotional consequences vivid without pretending to offer a comprehensive account of trans childhood. The trade-off is that the child’s perspective has to compete with the adults’ disagreement. The drama is most convincing when the family conflict illuminates Maxine’s experience rather than taking it over.

Production context and what it does—and does not—establish

A Guardian feature published on 9 October 2018 reported that Marchant observed meetings organized by Mermaids and consulted clinical psychologists at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust while developing the scripts. The Royal Television Society also reported that the creative team discussed the responsibility of telling a drama about a sensitive subject at a 2018 screening. This is useful context for how the series was developed, not evidence that it should be treated as clinical guidance.

Who should watch it?

Butterfly is best approached as a family drama rather than a documentary or a guide to gender identity. It is worth watching for the performances, its attention to how support and disagreement play out at home, and the compassion noted by reviewers. Viewers looking for a more expansive account of transgender children’s lives may find its focus narrow; viewers open to a concentrated, emotionally direct story may find that focus gives it much of its power.
