Kelly denied the allegation through his attorney. The account is Abi’s allegation, not a finding established by a court.
What Buku Abi said happened
In the two-part documentary R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey, Abi said that during a party she chose to sleep in her father’s office. She said she woke to him touching her and lay still, pretending to be asleep. The Washington Post quoted her recalling: “I just remember waking up to him touching me.” The Los Angeles Times also quoted that line.

Abi said she struggled for a long time to accept what she remembered and was afraid to tell anyone. In the documentary, as quoted by The Washington Post, she said: “For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened. … I was too scared to tell anybody.”
When she said she told her mother
Abi said she told her mother, Andrea Kelly, in 2009, when she was 10. Reporting says the family went to police and that the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS) investigated. The Washington Post reported those details while citing an unsealed court filing.

What the DCFS disposition means
The Washington Post, citing the unsealed filing, reported that DCFS recorded the matter as “unfounded.” The same passage reportedly quoted the caseworker as believing the events occurred but saying the delay in reporting required that disposition.
Those descriptions should be kept distinct: “unfounded” was the agency’s recorded disposition as reported from the filing; the caseworker’s view was also described in that filing. Neither is a judicial finding that Abi’s allegation was true or false.

R. Kelly’s response
Kelly denied the allegation through attorney Jennifer Bonjean. The Los Angeles Times quoted her saying, “Mr. Kelly vehemently denies these allegations.” The Times also reported Bonjean’s position that the earlier agency matter had been deemed unfounded and that the filmmakers had not contacted Kelly or his team.
How this relates to Kelly’s separate convictions
Kelly’s federal convictions are separate legal matters and do not adjudicate Abi’s specific allegation. The Washington Post reported that he was found guilty of federal racketeering and sex-trafficking charges in 2021 and received a 30-year sentence. In the Chicago case, he was sentenced to 20 years, with 19 years concurrent with the earlier sentence. The Associated Press reported that the Chicago jury convicted him on six of 13 counts, including child pornography production and enticement of minors.
