After Teddy dies, she returns to her office, enters the closet that serves as a transport chamber, and rejoins her people. They decide to end humanity. The closing images show familiar places and people after humans have been killed, while animals remain.
What happens at the end of Bugonia?
Teddy has spent the film insisting that Michelle, the CEO he abducts, is an alien from Andromeda. His suspicion is correct, but that does not make his actions justified. He has kidnapped and harmed people, and Michelle discovers evidence of his other victims.

Teddy’s grievance is personal: his mother, Sandy, was left in a coma after taking part in a clinical trial run by Michelle’s pharmaceutical company. Michelle tells him antifreeze is a hidden cure. Teddy gives it to Sandy, and she dies.
At the office, Michelle tells Teddy that her closet is a transport chamber. He enters wearing explosives, which detonate and kill him. Michelle stops the ambulance, returns to the closet, and boards her ship. With her people, she decides humanity should be destroyed; the film represents that decision with Michelle popping a bubble around Earth. The closing tableaux show a world without living humans, but with animals still present. Focus Features’ synopsis establishes the kidnapping premise; screenwriter Will Tracy confirmed the alien reveal and discussed the ending’s images in interviews. (Vulture)

Is Michelle really an alien?
Yes. The film ultimately confirms that Michelle is an Andromedan, rather than leaving Teddy’s central claim as an unresolved delusion. Tracy has also confirmed the reveal. Teddy is therefore right about her identity, even though his conspiracy-driven violence and treatment of other people remain his own responsibility. (Vulture) (Focus Features)
What does the ending mean?
The plot is definitive about Michelle’s identity and humanity’s fate; its thematic meaning is less settled. Tracy cautioned against treating any one account as the explanation: “I certainly wouldn’t endorse any article saying, ‘here is the explanation.’” He described the ending as bleak, while also allowing for the possibility that the planet might fare better without humans. Those are interpretive possibilities, not a single reading imposed by the film.
Rank #2
Tracy said the final images of human lives and places are meant to make viewers feel what would be lost if people disappeared. That emphasis invites a reading centered on human loss, even as the animals left behind can suggest a world continuing without us. Whether that feels like tragedy, ecological hope, or both is for viewers to decide. (Vulture) (IndieWire)
Why do animals remain alive?
The closing tableaux depict familiar human settings after the human population has been killed, while animals remain. The film does not supply a separate technical explanation for how each animal survives. Tracy’s comments point instead to the contrast: the images ask viewers to consider both the human experiences that vanish and the nonhuman life still present. (Vulture)

What does the title Bugonia mean?
“Bugonia” refers to an ancient Greek myth in which bees were believed to arise from an ox’s carcass. Bees also matter to Teddy: he keeps hives and connects their decline to chemicals made by Michelle’s company. The title’s association with death and the imagined emergence of new life resonates with the film’s grotesque imagery and ending, though that thematic connection is an interpretation, not an additional plot reveal. Focus Features lists Bugonia as a thriller and dark comedy released October 24, 2025, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Will Tracy. It is a remake of the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!. At the Venice Film Festival, Lanthimos connected the film’s dystopian concerns to technology, AI, wars, and climate change, saying, “Not much of the dystopia in this film is very fictional.” (Associated Press)
Rank #4
Tracy has said the ending was never in serious doubt while he was writing; his focus was on the characters’ emotional arcs rather than protecting a twist. He also described the remake as updated for contemporary concerns. Those comments offer context for the film’s choices, not a definitive key to every image. (Vulture) (IndieWire)
