The proposed Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, is not a new season viewers can watch. Hulu ordered a pilot in 2025, but Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on March 14, 2026, that Hulu would not move forward with it. The project never received a series order.
Was the Buffy reboot canceled?
Yes. Gellar announced, “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale.’” TVLine reported the announcement on March 14, 2026; Variety also reported the decision.

What was planned for New Sunnydale?
Hulu ordered a pilot in 2025, not a full season. The proposed story would center on a new Slayer, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning as Buffy in a recurring role. Ryan Kiera Armstrong was reported as the new Slayer; Chloé Zhao was attached to direct, and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman were connected to writing and executive production. Variety’s February 2025 report covered the pilot and reported roles.
Gellar later disclosed the title Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. Her comments framed it as a potential series and reflected on where Buffy might be in the world; the title did not mean a finished or released show existed. TVLine reported the title.

Can you watch the pilot?
The cited reports say a pilot was made, but they do not establish that it has been publicly released or is available to stream. Hulu’s decision not to proceed means there is no new series to watch; do not treat an alleged upload or leak as an official release without confirmation.

There are two distinct options for returning to the franchise. Neither is the canceled New Sunnydale pilot.
