Is the Buffy sequel still happening?
Not at Hulu. Gellar announced the decision, saying, “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with ‘Buffy: New Sunnydale.’” TVLine reported on March 14, 2026 that it was not known whether the project would be shopped elsewhere. That is what was reported at the time; it does not establish whether anything changed later.

What was Buffy: New Sunnydale supposed to be?
Gellar revealed the title in January 2026 and described the planned show as a continuation. As she put it, “It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot — it’s a continuation.” She said it would explore where Buffy was in the world and what the world was like with and without her. TVLine reported her explanation and title announcement on January 7, 2026.
The concept centered on a new Slayer, rather than simply picking up the original ensemble’s story as a new season. Ryan Kiera Armstrong was reported as the new lead, while Gellar was expected to return as Buffy Summers in a recurring role. Chloé Zhao was attached to direct and executive produce, and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman were attached as writers and executive producers. Those were attachments to the project before Hulu declined to proceed, not current production roles. Good Morning America / ABC News reported the proposed cast and creative team on February 6, 2025.

Was the Buffy pilot finished?
No. The pilot had been filmed, but that did not mean the proposed series was complete or ready for release. On March 18, 2026, Gellar said, “And pilots are not finished.” She also said a circulating script was inaccurate: “It’s not actually correct.” TheWrap reported her comments on March 18, 2026. The available account is Gellar’s; the pilot should be understood as unfinished, not as a completed season or a finished episode available to watch.
