BTS’s most memorable hair colors are tied to particular album eras, concept photos and performances—not to an objective ranking. Standouts include Suga’s mint in “Run,” J-Hope’s red in “DNA,” Jin’s blonde in “Idol,” and the contrasting black and pink looks Jungkook wore in different eras. The picks below favor shades that are distinctive, clearly associated with a moment, and documented in dated coverage. Colors can look different from one portrait to another, so each look is anchored to its source and context.
How to read a “best” list
“Best” here means memorable, not officially ranked or decided by a representative fan poll. The Ringer’s selections are one writer’s opinions; other choices below draw on dated entertainment coverage describing BTS’s styling. Hair color is only one part of an era’s visual identity, alongside clothing, makeup, photography and lighting. Vogue’s interview around “Love Yourself: Her” discusses the group’s evolving visual style and individual expression, rather than naming a winning shade: Vogue’s interview.
The timeline is selective, not a complete record of every member’s hair in every year. It covers documented looks through the May 2021 “Butter” teaser period, plus a separate 2020 Grammys example. A shade described for one photo or event should not be treated as a definitive color for an entire era, much less a claim about anyone’s appearance today.
Standout colors by member and era
Jimin: pink, rose gold and platinum
Jimin’s pink hair is among the most recognizable looks in this selection. Soompi describes bubble-gum pink as a fan-favorite and notes that Jimin said pink was one of his own favorites; that qualitative description is not a counted poll. The feature also distinguishes a shorter-lived rose-gold shade from the pink look associated with “Spring Day.” His ginger hair is linked to “Run,” while platinum is described as returning around “Blood Sweat & Tears” and “DNA.” Brown and turquoise-blue-silver also appear among the notable shades in Soompi’s retrospective: Soompi’s Jimin hair-color retrospective.

Suga: mint in “Run”
The Ringer’s writer picks Suga’s mint hair as his best hair era. The vivid shade is a strong example of how a color can become closely associated with a named period in the group’s visual history. It is an editorial favorite, not a measured consensus: The Ringer’s member-by-member picks.
J-Hope: red in “DNA,” with warmer looks elsewhere
The Ringer’s pick for J-Hope is fire-engine red in the “DNA” era. A separate Teen Vogue report on the 2017 American Music Awards describes him moving from a pumpkin-spice look to neon red, and notes other group colors including bright teal. These are distinct documented moments, not evidence that one shade defined all of J-Hope’s styling: Teen Vogue’s 2017 AMAs coverage.
Rank #2
Jin: blonde in “Idol”
The Ringer selects Jin’s blonde “Idol” look as a standout. Teen Vogue’s 2018 coverage also describes platinum blonde among the group’s summer looks, but that group-level description should not be used to relabel every Jin look or equate every blonde shade with the specific “Idol” choice: Teen Vogue’s 2018 summer-look report.
Jungkook: black in “Fake Love,” pink in “Idol” and “Airplane Pt. 2”
The Ringer’s choice for Jungkook is black hair in the “Fake Love” era—a reminder that a standout does not have to be a bright or pastel color. The same article points to pink during “Idol” and “Airplane Pt. 2” as a more adventurous contrast. Both are the writer’s selections, not an official ranking: The Ringer’s member-by-member picks.

RM and V: metallic grey, rose gold and cool-toned shades
Teen Vogue’s report on the 2017 AMAs describes RM’s silver-tinged gunmetal grey and V’s darker, cool-toned grey. In “Love Yourself: Her” concept photos, the publication describes RM with rose-gold blond, while V appears among the members in subtler blond and brunette shades. The contrast shows why it helps to identify the image or event when naming a color: Teen Vogue’s 2017 AMAs hair-color report and Teen Vogue’s “Love Yourself: Her” concept-photo coverage.
Group looks captured in dated photos
“Love Yourself: Her” concept photos
Teen Vogue’s coverage of the concept photos describes a varied palette: subtler blond and brunette shades for Jimin, Jin, V and Jungkook; bright teal bangs for Suga; pumpkin-spice strands for J-Hope; and rose-gold blond for RM. The article credits the photos to Big Hit Entertainment. This is a useful snapshot of the group’s styling for that visual release, not a complete inventory of every look during the album cycle: Teen Vogue’s concept-photo report.

2017 American Music Awards
The AMAs coverage provides another event-specific comparison: RM’s gunmetal grey, V’s darker grey and J-Hope’s neon red. Teen Vogue also notes neon red, pumpkin-spice orange and bright teal among the group’s colors. Event descriptions refer to what was seen at that appearance; they do not establish a permanent or era-wide shade for each member: Teen Vogue’s 2017 AMAs hair-color report.
2020 Grammys
TIME described the group’s hair at the 2020 Grammys as browns and blondes, calling Jimin’s shade buttery blonde. That is a dated event look, distinct from descriptions of his pink, ginger or platinum styles in other eras: TIME’s 2020 Grammys coverage.

“Butter” teasers in May 2021
Teen Vogue’s report on official fan-club portraits from the “Butter” teaser period described cotton-candy pink for RM, vintage blonde for J-Hope, platinum blonde for Jimin, light brown for Jin, chestnut brown for V, dark brown for Suga, and purple for Jungkook. The same report noted that a May 9 group teaser showed Jimin with rainbow hair and J-Hope with a more neon-looking blonde. The portraits and teaser therefore offer different views of the styling rather than a single unchanging palette; the article credits a Butter portrait to BIGHIT MUSIC: Teen Vogue’s “Butter” hair-color report.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a color may look different between images
Portraits, promotional teasers and stage appearances are separate visual records. A member may have different shades across a release’s images, and lighting can affect how a color reads. The May 2021 “Butter” report itself describes one palette in fan-club portraits and a different impression in the May 9 group teaser. For a reliable comparison, match the description to the specific photo, teaser or event rather than assuming one image represents every appearance from an era.
