Bruce Springsteen endorsed Kamala Harris for president and Tim Walz for vice president in an Instagram video posted October 3, 2024. He also voiced opposition to Donald Trump and JD Vance, saying his decision rested on the election’s stakes, democratic institutions and an inclusive vision of America.
What did Bruce Springsteen say?
Springsteen opened by acknowledging that friends, fans and members of the press had asked whom he supported. He said his opinions were no more or less important than those of other citizens, then made his choice explicit: “I’m supporting Kamala Harris for president and Tim Waltz for vice president and opposing Donald Trump and JD Vance.” The Inquirer’s transcription spells Walz’s name as “Waltz” in this quoted sentence; the candidate’s name is Tim Walz. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the video and linked to Springsteen’s Instagram post. Its report described him delivering the message seated at a diner counter.
Why did Springsteen endorse Harris and Walz?
Springsteen called the election consequential and described the country as politically, spiritually and emotionally divided. He argued that Trump’s disdain for the Constitution, democracy, the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power should disqualify him from the presidency. He also described Harris and Walz as committed to a country that respects and includes people across class, religion, race, political viewpoint and sexual identity.
In the Inquirer’s transcription, Springsteen called Trump “the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime.” He described the inclusive vision he associated with Harris and Walz as “the vision of America I’ve been consistently writing about for 55 years.” These are Springsteen’s characterizations, not independent assessments of either candidate. The Guardian also reported the endorsement and reproduced portions of his statement.

Did Springsteen say how he would vote?
Yes. He said he would vote for Harris and Walz on November 5, 2024, adding: “I’ve only got one vote, and it’s one of the most precious possessions that I have.”
What is known about the endorsement’s political impact?
Springsteen had joined John Kerry, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail in earlier election cycles, according to a CNN transcript from October 4, 2024. That is limited context, not a complete account of his political activity.
