Who reacted to Brooklyn Beckham’s statement?
It was John O’Kane, whom The Independent identifies as a former Manchester United teammate of David Beckham. O’Kane and Beckham also lived together, according to the report. Goal separately reported O’Kane’s reaction and linked the pair through Manchester United’s academy system.
What did O’Kane say?
In posts on X reproduced by The Independent, O’Kane said he had lived with Beckham for a few years and characterized him as someone who liked to be in “TOTAL CONTROL” and was “OBSESSIVE on PERFECTION.” O’Kane then wrote: “Brand Beckham should not come before your kids no matter what has happened!!”
In a follow-up, O’Kane described Beckham’s controlling and perfectionist traits as part of what made him a footballer, in his opinion. He added that he believed parents should not disown their children, whatever had happened. These are O’Kane’s judgments about the family dispute, not findings about what took place.

What had Brooklyn Beckham said?
Brooklyn posted his statement on Instagram on 19 January 2026, according to Sky News, which reproduced it in full. He said he did not want to reconcile with his family and wrote: “I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”
He also alleged that his parents had controlled press narratives and tried to damage his relationship with his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham. Those claims are Brooklyn’s account of the dispute; the statement and the reports of O’Kane’s reaction do not independently establish whether they are true.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Did David Beckham respond directly?
No direct response to Brooklyn’s allegations is established by the reporting. At Davos on 20 January, David Beckham spoke about children making mistakes, saying: “They make mistakes. Children are allowed to make mistakes. That’s how they learn.” The Associated Press and The Guardian reported that he was discussing social media and did not directly address the family dispute.
The public remarks therefore came from three different people and should not be conflated: Brooklyn made allegations in his Instagram statement, O’Kane offered his opinion on X, and David Beckham spoke at Davos about children and social media.
