Yes. Brooke Shields and Laura Linney knew each other in grade school and were very close for a time. Their childhood friendship resurfaced publicly after Shields shared a photo of the two girls together; Linney later recalled that it was taken on a family vacation to Howe Caverns in upstate New York.

They attended grade school together. Shields said on her podcast, Now What? with Brooke Shields, “I went to grade school with Laura Linney.” Linney has also said they grew up together, went to grade school together and were very close for a period. Their recollections establish school as their shared setting, but not the exact date or circumstances of their first meeting.
What brought their childhood friendship back into view?
A throwback photograph of the two as children drew renewed attention to their connection. A 2023 retrospective reported that Shields had shared the image on Instagram and quoted her caption; Linney reposted the photo with a message calling Shields her “sweet childhood friend.” Those captions are reported by later coverage rather than verified here against the original posts.

Did they stay close as adults?
Linney has described a lasting connection when they meet, saying it is nice to have known one another as little children. She also spoke of a deep bond rooted in shared memories of their parents, who have since died. These comments show that the friendship remains meaningful to her; they do not establish how often the two see or speak to each other now.
How did Shields’s early fame fit into the story?
Shields has said her mother arranged for school friends to accompany her on photo shoots so she would not feel isolated. In a later interview, she recalled, “so I wasn’t an isolated kid.” Linney also spoke about witnessing Shields’s early fame in the documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields. That context helps explain the unusual backdrop to Shields’s childhood, but neither recollection establishes that fame was the reason the girls became friends.
