Britney Spears said Sabrina Carpenter’s alien kiss at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards left her puzzled—but she also said she adored Carpenter and was pleased to be mentioned. Spears reacted in an Instagram video posted the day after the show, after seeing clips online rather than watching the broadcast.
What did Britney Spears say about Sabrina Carpenter?
“Why is she kissing an alien onstage?” Spears asked in the video, as transcribed by Us Weekly. She continued: “I love her. I adore her to death [but] I didn’t understand that part. Why didn’t she kiss a girl? That was weird.” The question about kissing a girl was Spears’s own comment; it does not establish the alien’s gender.
Spears also praised Carpenter for mentioning her on the red carpet, saying, “She made me cool.” Her response combined confusion about one stage moment with affection for Carpenter and appreciation for the shout-out—not an unqualified criticism or evidence of a feud.
Did Spears watch the 2024 VMAs?
No. In the longer transcript published by Rolling Stone Australia, Spears said: “Did you guys watch the VMAs? I didn’t watch the VMAs, but I did see stuff on my phone from YouTube of Sabrina Carpenter.” She was reacting to clips, not describing a live viewing of Carpenter’s performance.
