How the episode connects to Eric Dane’s ALS diagnosis
Dane announced publicly in April 2025 that he had ALS and said he hoped to continue working. The Associated Press described ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, as a progressive disease that attacks nerve cells controlling muscles throughout the body. “Fire Fighter” premiered months later, on November 24, 2025.
The connection is real, but Matthew should not be treated as a direct biography of Dane. Grassi’s account of their conversations establishes that Dane was involved in developing the story; it does not make the fictional character’s experiences a record of the actor’s life.
