John Stirling’s cousin is Michaela, played by Masali Baduza—not Michael, the man Francesca eventually loves in Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked. The change is intentional: the series is adapting Francesca’s story as a romance between women. Netflix has confirmed Francesca and Michaela as the focus of Season 5, but has not disclosed how their relationship will unfold.
What happens in the Season 3 cousin reveal?
In the Season 3 finale, John introduces Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd, to his cousin Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. Francesca reacts with visible fluster. The moment signals a significant change from the books, where John’s cousin is Michael Stirling.
Netflix’s 2024 explanation of Michaela Stirling identifies her as a gender-swapped adaptation of Michael, a major character in Quinn’s sixth Bridgerton novel, When He Was Wicked.
How does Michaela differ from Michael in the book?
| Story element | Julia Quinn’s novel | Netflix adaptation |
|---|---|---|
| John’s cousin | Michael Stirling | Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza |
| Francesca’s later love story | After John’s death, Francesca eventually falls for Michael. | The adaptation changes Michael to Michaela, making the story a romance between women. |
| Relationship to the source | The novel’s romance is not written as a queer love story. | The series retains a broad relationship setup but changes the partner’s gender and the romance’s premise. |
Netflix’s account of the reveal and the book-to-screen distinction make clear that this is an adaptation choice, not a claim that Quinn’s novel already tells Francesca’s story as a queer romance.

Why did Bridgerton change Michael Stirling to Michaela?
Showrunner Jess Brownell has described the decision as part of the series’ effort to make room for queer love within its romantic fantasy. In a June 2024 interview with TVLine, she said, “I really related to Francesca’s story as a queer woman,” and connected Francesca’s sense of being different with a possible queer reading of the character. Brownell also acknowledged the distinction: Quinn’s book was not intended as a queer story. Her interpretation of Francesca is the showrunner’s perspective, not a description of the novel’s original premise.
Brownell also said the series wanted to introduce this part of Francesca’s story early because the show has more installments in which to develop it than some of the other book stories. In a March 2026 interview, she put the broader aim this way: “It never felt right to not be inclusive of queer love as well within that fantasy.”

Netflix’s Season 5 preview describes the season as the show’s first centered on a same-gender couple. That describes the season’s focus; it does not mean that no queer characters or stories have appeared earlier in the series.
What is confirmed about Francesca and Michaela in Season 5?
Netflix’s March 30, 2026 Season 5 preview confirms Francesca and Michaela as the season’s love story. It sets up Francesca as a grieving widow who plans to return to the marriage mart for practical reasons, two years after John’s death. Michaela returns to London to tend the Kilmartin estate.
Rank #3
Brownell says the season will reveal Michaela’s perspective on why she left at the Season 4 finale. Netflix also reports that journalists asked, “What did that mean? What was she feeling?” The preview establishes that her departure will be explored; it does not reveal her reasons or the outcome of the romance.

The announced premise confirms the central pairing and a few circumstances around their reunion, not every plot beat. Netflix’s preview does not establish how Francesca and Michaela’s relationship will develop, what Michaela’s explanation for leaving will be, or the story’s eventual outcome. Those details should not be treated as confirmed based on the Season 5 announcement.
