Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 Review: A Split Release Tests the Romance

Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 sets up Benedict and Sophie’s romance, but the four-week break before Part 2 interrupts the flow. Its familiar fairy-tale frame gets a boost from the leads’ chemistry.

Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 makes the show’s familiar romantic machinery work through the chemistry between Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek. Its more frustrating choice is the split-season release: Netflix delivered only four of the season’s eight episodes, then made viewers wait nearly a month for the rest. That interruption may undercut the momentum of a romance built to be devoured, even as the first half gives its central couple room to charm.

What Part 1 includes

Season 4 follows bohemian Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Baek, a maid with ambitions and secrets. Benedict first encounters her at a masquerade ball, where she appears as the masked Lady in Silver. Netflix identifies the season as an adaptation of Julia Quinn’s third Bridgerton novel, An Offer from a Gentleman.

Part 1 consists of the first four episodes:

  • “The Waltz”
  • “Time Transfixed”
  • “The Field Next to the Other Road”
  • “An Offer from a Gentleman”

The remaining four episodes form Part 2. Netflix released Part 1 on January 29, 2026, and Part 2 on February 26, leaving roughly four weeks between batches. Netflix’s Season 4 announcement and its official episode list establish the schedule and episode divisions.

The split is the season’s most awkward choice

Releasing a season in two batches is not inherently a flaw, but it changes how a romance lands. Four episodes can establish the attraction and its obstacles; the wait then suspends that arc before the season’s final four episodes arrive. For viewers who prefer to follow a story in one continuous stretch, that break interrupts the binge and the emotional momentum. Calling the format problematic is an editorial judgment about that experience, not evidence that viewers universally disliked it.

TechRadar’s January 29 review made the same format criticism, saying Netflix had “annoyingly decided to split season 4 in half.” That is one outlet’s assessment, not a consensus. Netflix’s viewing figures show that the season reached a large audience, but they cannot tell us whether viewers liked the split or whether it affected their satisfaction.

A familiar fairy tale gets a lift from its leads

The central romance draws on a recognizable Cinderella setup: a masked encounter, a woman whose social position constrains her, and a courtship shaped by the divide between appearance and reality. That familiarity can make the story feel predictable. TechRadar described the season as “more of the same” and its courtship as a Cinderella retelling, but also called the romance charming and the leads’ chemistry undeniable.

That tension is the best case for Part 1. The fairy-tale shape may be familiar, yet Benedict and Sophie’s pairing gives it a reason to keep watching. Luke Thompson, who plays Benedict, described the season’s creative premise to Netflix Tudum as “the struggle between a proper old-school fairy tale — the romance of it — and the actual reality of the world.” His comment frames the intended contrast; it is not an independent review.

What the viewing numbers do—and don’t—show

Netflix reported 39.7 million views for Season 4 in the week of January 26, when the season reached No. 1 on the English TV list and appeared in the Top 10 in 91 countries. In its first-half 2026 viewing report, Netflix recorded 100.2 million views for the season. These figures indicate substantial reach, but neither isolates Part 1’s performance from the full season, measures satisfaction, nor establishes that the split caused people to watch.
