Their carriage ride becomes the season’s long-awaited friends-to-lovers turning point—and ends with Colin asking Penelope to marry him.
What happens in “Old Friends”?
“Old Friends” is the fourth and final episode of Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1. Penelope is still trying to secure a husband while keeping her secret life as Lady Whistledown in view. Lord Debling appears to offer a possible match, while Colin has been helping Penelope navigate the marriage mart.
At the queen’s ball, Penelope’s prospects with Debling are close to becoming an engagement. But Colin’s intervention helps derail that possibility. Netflix’s account of the episode describes Penelope leaving the ball heartbroken and Colin overwhelmed by feelings he has been trying to suppress. They leave together in the same carriage.
Why Colin and Penelope’s carriage scene matters
The Polin carriage scene pays off the friends-to-lovers story that has been building between Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton). Colin tells her that his feelings are not something he can simply set aside: “A feeling that is like torture, but one which I cannot, will not, do not want to give up,” as quoted by TVLine.

Penelope initially reminds him, “Colin, we are friends.” Then she makes her own feelings plain: “But I would very much like to be more than friends.” They kiss and become intimate. Netflix showrunner Jess Brownell described the scene’s emotional register this way: “There’s joy there. It’s a powerful thing to show on television — that intimacy can mean comfort, joy, and friendship,” in Netflix Tudum’s ending recap.
When the carriage reaches the Bridgertons’ home, Colin asks, “For God’s sake, Penelope, are you going to marry me or not?” The question closes the episode on a proposal-shaped cliffhanger: the feelings are no longer in doubt, but Penelope’s answer is left for the next installment.

How the carriage moment differs from the book
Season 3 adapts Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the novel centered on Colin and Penelope. Netflix calls the carriage ride a long-awaited moment from the books, but the screen version is not a one-to-one recreation: TVLine notes that the couple arrives at the carriage in different circumstances in the novel.
If you want the page version of their romance, Netflix’s Season 3 guide identifies Romancing Mister Bridgerton as the source novel. The book and show share the relationship’s key appeal, but this episode shapes the carriage confession around the series’ own events and its ongoing Lady Whistledown story.

The song and how the scene was filmed
Netflix’s ending recap identifies the scene’s music as an orchestral version of Pitbull’s “Give Me Everything.” A Netflix soundtrack listing separately names an Episode 4 track “Give Me Everything – Stripped Down”; that title alone does not establish that it is the exact recording or mix used in the carriage scene.
Netflix’s behind-the-scenes account also describes a practical filming constraint: the camera operator could not fit inside the carriage, leaving Coughlan and Newton alone in the vehicle. Director Andrew Ahn told them to keep performing until he called cut. They continued because they could not hear the crew from inside.
