He agrees, and their first kiss leaves him deeply affected. The episode turns their effort to improve her prospects into a more intimate and uncertain relationship.
What happens in “How Bright the Moon”?
Episode 2 continues Penelope and Colin’s arrangement: he coaches her as she tries to improve her chances in the marriage market. Their conversations touch on where she feels at ease, while a quieter moment—Penelope tending a cut on Colin’s palm—brings them physically closer.
Penelope later worries that she has spoiled her chances of finding a husband. She asks Colin to kiss her, explaining that she wants to know what it is like and will not hold him to anything afterward. He agrees. The kiss grows more passionate; Penelope returns inside, while Colin is left contemplating what has passed between them.
Why does Penelope ask Colin to kiss her?
Her request comes from fear as much as curiosity. Penelope believes she may not find a husband and wants the experience of a kiss rather than continuing to wonder about it. Netflix’s character guide confirms that motivation and identifies this as Penelope and Colin’s first kiss in the series.

The scene also shifts the meaning of Colin’s coaching. He had been helping Penelope pursue other prospects, but the kiss makes his own feelings harder to leave outside the arrangement. Netflix describes him as deeply affected by the moment; the episode leaves the consequences unresolved rather than turning the kiss into an immediate declaration.
How the episode connects to Julia Quinn’s novel
The childhood-memory moment is identified in a secondary recap as a reference to Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mr. Bridgerton, the novel centered on Penelope and Colin. Netflix says the television series is inspired by Quinn’s novels. That connection is useful context, but it does not mean the show reproduces every scene or detail from the book exactly.

For readers interested in the adaptation, the novel offers a way to explore the characters’ story in its original book form. Keep the two versions distinct: this episode stages the kiss and its immediate emotional aftermath on screen, while the novel tells its story through prose and its own structure.

Netflix Tudum’s Season 3 music guide lists Vitamin String Quartet’s performance of BTS’s “Dynamite” and Shimmer’s performance of Nick Jonas’s “Jealous” among Episode 2’s cues. The article also discusses how music is used across the season. These soundtrack choices are part of the episode’s presentation; the available information does not establish that a physical Season 3 soundtrack edition exists.

In a Netflix Tudum interview, Nicola Coughlan said she felt nervous about filming Penelope’s first kiss. Coughlan and Luke Newton practiced the scene with intimacy coordinator Lizzy Talbot ahead of filming. That production detail offers context for how the scene was prepared, rather than a description of what viewers see in the finished episode.
