How did ballet take her from Perth to New York?
In a profile published on 22 August 2016, PerthNow reported that Shepherd was accepted into New York City Ballet at 18. The Perth Modernian Society later described her as the first Australian hired by the company in its August 2024 newsletter. That newsletter is a retrospective account; the distinction is not stated in the ABC biography. PerthNow, 22 August 2016 Perth Modernian Society newsletter, August 2024
Why did she return to Perth?
PerthNow reported that Shepherd returned from New York to Perth in 2009 after an operation to remove an extra bone in her ankle, which had been damaging a tendon. The same 2016 profile described a demanding run of dance injuries: eight stress fractures in her feet, a broken hip bone, two broken ribs and a broken wrist. These details come from the newspaper’s account of her ballet career, rather than a medical or independently verified injury record.

Her family was closely connected to dance in Perth. PerthNow reported that her mother, Sonya Shepherd, ran the Charlesworth Ballet Institute and that her grandmother, Terri Charlesworth, founded it in 1960. The Perth Modernian Society’s 2024 newsletter also connects Shepherd to her grandmother and the school’s dance program.
How did Shepherd move from dance to television?
PerthNow’s 2016 profile described Shepherd as a Vivien’s model and a retired ballerina. Those are descriptions from that year; they do not establish whether she models today. The ABC Friends WA 2019 annual general meeting flyer described her as an ABC News Perth presenter and also noted her New York City Ballet background. ABC Friends WA, Annual General Meeting 2019 flyer
Her dance experience offered a practical lesson for live broadcasting. In the 2016 PerthNow profile, Shepherd said: “In ballet, if something goes wrong, you just have to make it work.” She added, “As they say, ‘the show must go on’, and it’s the same for live TV.” These were remarks quoted at the time, not recent comments.

PerthNow reported that Shepherd was temporarily anchoring the ABC News Perth desk in August 2016 while regular host James McHale recovered from surgery. It was a fill-in assignment, not evidence of her current anchoring schedule. For her present position, ABC’s profile is the more current source: it lists her as a reporter, producer and presenter.
