On July 12, 2024, Superior Court Judge Kevin Saxby sentenced him to 226 years in prison, according to the Alaska Department of Law.
Who were Kathleen Jo Henry and Veronica Abouchuk?
Henry was 30 when she was murdered in 2019; Abouchuk was 52 when she was killed in 2018, the Alaska Department of Law said in its sentencing announcement. The women came from Eek and Stebbins, small villages in western Alaska, according to the Associated Press. Alaska Public Media reported that family and community members attended Smith’s sentencing.
How did the investigation begin?
Detectives were alerted after a woman shared videos from Smith’s phone with them, the Alaska Department of Law said. The images and video led investigators to identify Henry, who had previously been unknown to them. The state said Smith later admitted during questioning to killing Abouchuk.
The Associated Press reported that jurors heard a detailed confession and saw evidence involving a cellphone and memory card. Accounts of how a witness came to possess the phone or card have varied, so the available reporting does not support presenting one sequence as undisputed. The evidence was described in court and official summaries; the footage itself is not necessary to understand the case.

What did the jury decide?
On February 22, 2024, an Anchorage jury found Smith guilty on 14 counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, the Alaska Department of Law announced. The state also listed convictions for second-degree sexual assault, tampering with evidence, and misconduct involving a corpse.
The jury found that Henry had been subjected to substantial physical torture, an aggravating factor that, according to the state, carried a mandatory 99-year sentence for her murder. That finding was part of the jury’s verdict; the court later imposed a total sentence for the case.
