Queen guitarist Brian May said in a public update in September 2024 that doctors had told him he had suffered a minor stroke about a week earlier. He described suddenly losing control of his left arm, but said he could play guitar again by the time he shared the news.
What Brian May said happened
In an update reported by ABC News Australia on 5 September 2024, May said the episode came on suddenly. “All of a sudden — out of the blue — I didn’t have any control over this arm, so was a little scary,” he said. He described it as a minor stroke and said it had happened about a week before his update.

May said he was taken to Frimley Park Hospital. He praised the care he received there: “I have to say I had the most fantastic care and attention from Frimley Hospital where I went [with] blue lights flashing … the lot.”
Could Brian May still play guitar?
May said his ability to play guitar had briefly been in doubt, but that he could play again when he recorded his update. That is what he reported about his ability at that time; it does not establish his present health or playing status.

What he said about recovery at the time
May said he was following doctors’ instructions to do very little while he recovered. In that immediate update, he said he was not allowed to drive or fly and had been told to avoid raising his heart rate too high. These were personal instructions he reported receiving then, not general guidance for people recovering from a stroke.
Why May waited to share the news
May said he had delayed making the disclosure because he did not want sympathy. “I really don’t want sympathy,” he said, according to The Guardian’s 4 September 2024 report, updated on 2 April 2025.

A 2025 Woman & Home report quoted May’s wife, Anita Dobson, saying she had become strict about making sure he took his medication after the stroke. The report also noted that May appeared with Queen drummer Roger Taylor at the Last Night of the Proms after his disclosure. This later coverage provides limited personal and performance context, not a clinical account or confirmation of May’s current condition.
The available reports document what May said in September 2024 and include limited later context. They do not establish whether he has ongoing symptoms, is fully recovered, or what his medical status is today.
