Brats is a 2024 feature documentary in which Andrew McCarthy revisits the Brat Pack label and asks what belonging to it meant. Its most compelling tension is between that personal reckoning and the larger story of how a nickname came to shape a generation of actors’ public identities. Calling the film “therapeutic” is an interpretation of its reflective approach, not a clinical claim.
What is Brats about?
Directed by McCarthy, Brats brings him back into conversation with fellow Brat Packers. Hulu’s official description puts the central question plainly: “Feature documentary Brats follows Andrew McCarthy reuniting with and interviewing fellow Brat Packers to answer: What did it mean to be part of the Brat Pack?” Hulu’s listing identifies it as a 2024 feature documentary, not a scripted dramatization.

The film also looks back at the 1980s movies associated with the young actors and the public narrative that followed when they were grouped under the “Brat Pack” name. ABC News Studios identified journalist David Blum as the person who coined the term in a 1985 New York Magazine cover story; the documentary includes a conversation between Blum and McCarthy. ABC News Studios’ announcement described that meeting as their first conversation.
Does the personal inquiry illuminate the group’s legacy?
The film’s strongest premise is also its limitation as a broad history: McCarthy is not approaching the label from a neutral distance. The Associated Press’ June 11, 2024 review describes him trying, nearly four decades after the label emerged, to understand what it meant and how its members dealt with it. The AP reports that McCarthy saw the label as defining. That personal stake gives the film its reflective force, while keeping its inquiry anchored in his experience.

TIME’s June 13, 2024 review emphasizes that interviewees—including people described as Brat Pack-adjacent—bring different understandings of what the designation meant. That range matters: “Brat Pack” was a label imposed on a set of young performers, not necessarily a membership list or identity everyone accepted in the same way. The documentary’s value lies in making room for those differing memories rather than treating the group as a unified club with one settled account.
Is “therapeutic” the right word for the film?
As a critical description, “therapeutic” fits the film’s self-examining shape: McCarthy returns to a label that, according to the AP’s account, he regarded as defining, and seeks to understand its consequences through conversations with others. The word should not be taken as a claim about treatment or a clinical outcome. The film presents a retrospective inquiry into identity, reputation, and shared cultural memory.
