Brangelina: The Rise and Fall of Hollywood’s Most Iconic Couple

Few celebrity relationships became as powerful a global story as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s. Their pairing had all the elements of a modern Hollywood myth: two major stars meeting on a hit film, a romance emerging while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston, an expanding family, international humanitarian work, a French vineyard, and a private marriage that eventually ended in years of court battles.

The name “Brangelina” reduced a complicated relationship to a marketable label. The documented record is more complicated. Pitt and Jolie were together for roughly 12 years, married for a little over two, and shared a family of six children. Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016. They were declared legally single in 2019, but their divorce case was not formally settled until December 2024. Their separate dispute over Château Miraval remained active in 2026.

The beginning: Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie met while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004. The film, released in June 2005, cast them as a married couple who discover that they are both assassins. Their fictional marriage is already collapsing when the story begins, before violence and attraction pull the characters back together.

That premise became almost impossible to separate from the actors’ real-life headlines. Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston when filming started. Pitt and Aniston announced their separation in January 2005, Aniston filed for divorce in March, and the divorce became final in October of that year.

Jolie and Pitt publicly denied that they had begun an affair during the marriage. The precise date on which their romantic relationship began has never been independently established. It is fair to say that Jolie was widely portrayed as the reason for the Pitt-Aniston breakup; it is not fair to present an affair during filming as an established fact.

The film itself was a major commercial success. According to Box Office Mojo, Mr. & Mrs. Smith earned approximately $487.3 million worldwide, making it one of 2005’s biggest releases. The movie supplied the original image of Brangelina: glamorous, dangerous, photogenic, and apparently combustible.

From speculation to public relationship

In April 2005, photographs of Pitt, Jolie, and Jolie’s son Maddox in Kenya intensified speculation that the two actors were together. The relationship became publicly undeniable in early 2006, when Jolie confirmed that she was pregnant with Pitt’s child.

Their daughter Shiloh was born in Namibia on May 27, 2006. Pitt and Jolie sold the first photographs of the baby to People magazine and donated the reported proceeds to charity. The deal became an early example of how the couple managed celebrity attention: they could not prevent global interest in their family, but they could direct some of its commercial value toward humanitarian causes.

The family grew through both adoption and birth. Pitt became involved in Jolie’s family, and the couple later adopted Pax from Vietnam in 2007. Jolie had already adopted Maddox from Cambodia and Zahara from Ethiopia. In 2008, Jolie gave birth to twins Knox and Vivienne in France.

A celebrity brand built around family and purpose

Brangelina’s appeal extended beyond conventional movie-star glamour. Jolie had served as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador since 2001 and was appointed Special Envoy to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in April 2012. Her work with refugees gave the couple’s public image an international and humanitarian dimension.

They were photographed travelling with their children, attending premieres, visiting refugee camps, and moving between Hollywood and Europe. The family itself became part of the public narrative. Their six children—Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne—were presented as a multicultural family whose life crossed national borders.

In April 2012, Pitt and Jolie announced their engagement. They married in a private ceremony at Château Miraval in August 2014. The wedding took place at the French estate they had acquired interests in several years earlier, making the property central not only to their business affairs but also to the mythology of the relationship.

Château Miraval: the estate at the centre of the later conflict

Château Miraval is a Provence estate known for its vineyard and Miraval rosé. Pitt and Jolie acquired interests in the property in 2008 through separate investment companies. The ownership structure was layered: Pitt’s company, Mondo Bongo, and Jolie’s company, Nouvel, ultimately held equal interests in the Luxembourg company that owned the French vineyard.

For years, Miraval represented the couple’s shared future. It was a family retreat, their wedding venue, and a valuable wine business. After the relationship ended, it became the subject of a separate legal fight.

In 2021, Jolie sold Nouvel, the company holding her interest in Miraval, to Tenute del Mondo, a wine company associated with Yuri Shefler’s SPI Group. Pitt sued Jolie and related parties in February 2022. He argued that the sale violated an agreement requiring his consent before her interest could be transferred and that it placed him in business partnership with Shefler’s group.

Jolie’s position has included the claim that Pitt’s proposed purchase of her interest required her to sign a broad nondisclosure agreement concerning him. Her lawyers characterized that demand as an effort to suppress allegations of abuse. Pitt’s lawsuit presented the transaction as unlawful and damaging to the business. These are competing litigation positions, not findings that either side’s complete account is true.

In 2026, the California Court of Appeal reversed a trial-court ruling concerning personal jurisdiction over Shefler. The appellate court held that the evidence could support California jurisdiction because Shefler allegedly played a significant role in arranging and completing the purchase, communicated with California-based parties, and participated in a transaction governed by California law with a California forum-selection clause.

That ruling was procedural. It did not decide that Jolie breached a contract, establish Pitt’s claimed damages, or order the sale to be undone. As of August 7, 2026, the Miraval lawsuit remained separate from the finalized divorce settlement.

The 2016 separation and the private-plane incident

Jolie filed for dissolution of marriage on September 19, 2016, citing irreconcilable differences and requesting primary physical custody of the children. The filing followed a September 14 private-plane flight from Europe to Los Angeles involving Jolie, Pitt, and the children.

Jolie later alleged that Pitt had physically and verbally abused her and the children during the flight. Pitt denied the allegations. Because the matter involved family proceedings, investigative files, and confidential records, the public account consists largely of allegations, legal filings, and heavily redacted material rather than a complete, publicly adjudicated account of everything that happened aboard the aircraft.

The FBI reviewed the incident and announced in November 2016 that it would not pursue further investigation. No criminal charges were filed. The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services investigation was also reported to have closed without a finding of abuse.

A later-released, heavily redacted FBI report stated that an agent prepared a probable-cause statement for prosecutors, but the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office ultimately agreed that criminal charges would not be pursued. That outcome should be described precisely. It does not mean a court conducted a trial and found that no incident occurred. It means that no criminal prosecution resulted, and child-services officials reportedly closed their inquiry without a finding of abuse.

Custody litigation and the disqualified private judge

The divorce case continued well beyond the initial filing. In 2017, Pitt and Jolie agreed to use a privately compensated temporary judge, John W. Ouderkirk, in their family-law proceedings.

In 2020, Jolie sought to disqualify Ouderkirk. She argued that he had failed to disclose continuing professional relationships involving Pitt’s attorneys. In July 2021, the California Court of Appeal ordered the judge disqualified. The court held that his disclosure failures, combined with his professional relationships with Pitt’s counsel, could cause an objective person to reasonably question his impartiality.

The appellate court vacated the private judge’s custody decision. This is important because celebrity coverage often reduces the episode to the claim that Pitt “won” equal custody. A private judge had issued a custody decision that included equal custody, but that decision was later vacated after the judge was disqualified. It cannot accurately be described as a final, permanent 50/50 custody victory.

In April 2019, Pitt and Jolie were declared legally single. That restored their separate marital status, but it did not immediately resolve every dispute involving custody, property, finances, or the vineyard.

The divorce finally settles

Pitt and Jolie signed a written settlement agreement on December 30, 2024. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Scott J. Nord approved it the following day, December 31, ending the formal divorce case after more than eight years of litigation.

The full terms were not made public. One reported provision states that both parties waived the right to future spousal financial support. The settlement resolved the marital dissolution and the claims covered by that agreement, but it did not end the Miraval lawsuit.

This distinction explains why the legal story did not finish with the 2024 settlement. The marriage case ended; the business dispute continued. A divorce settlement can resolve the financial and property issues included within it without eliminating every separate claim one former spouse may have against the other or against outside parties.

Why Brangelina became more than a celebrity romance

The rise and fall of Brangelina cannot be reduced to one film, one scandal, or one court filing. Their public image was created by several storylines arriving at once:

  1. A hit movie pairing: Mr. & Mrs. Smith gave audiences a ready-made story about attraction, conflict, and marriage.
  2. A controversial beginning: Pitt’s marriage to Aniston made every photograph and interview part of a larger public argument.
  3. A global family: Adoption, international births, and six children made the couple’s private life unusually visible.
  4. Humanitarian credibility: Jolie’s refugee work gave their celebrity image a political and charitable dimension.
  5. A carefully photographed lifestyle: Miraval, international travel, film premieres, and family appearances created a coherent public brand.
  6. A dramatic legal collapse: The separation brought allegations, confidential investigations, custody litigation, judicial-disqualification proceedings, and a business lawsuit.

The public can establish the chronology: when they met, when their relationship became public, when they married, when Jolie filed for divorce, what courts decided, what investigations did not lead to, and how the Miraval transaction became contested. It cannot responsibly reconstruct every private reason the relationship ended or declare one former partner’s entire account to be the complete truth.

That is the central tension in the Brangelina story. The couple’s public identity depended on a sense of intimacy with the audience, yet the most consequential events took place in private homes, family proceedings, sealed negotiations, and confidential investigations. The closer the public looked, the less complete the available record became.

The Bottom Line

Brangelina rose from the chemistry of Mr. & Mrs. Smith into a global celebrity brand built on family, humanitarian work, and the romance of Château Miraval. Its collapse produced allegations and years of legal disputes, but the public record does not justify treating every disputed claim as settled fact. Pitt and Jolie were declared legally single in 2019, their divorce settlement was approved on December 31, 2024, and the separate Miraval litigation was still active in 2026.
