Bowen Yang’s oddest Saturday Night Live moment was not a real-life intimate encounter with Sydney Sweeney. It was playing a straight character in the scripted sketch “Bowen’s Straight,” which Yang later discussed with Stephen Colbert. Reporting on the interview says Yang spoke with Sweeney about the scene before filming, but no complete transcript or recording confirms his exact words.
What Yang said about the sketch
Yang discussed the scene during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Yahoo Entertainment’s search-result summary reports that he described pretending to be straight for the sketch as his strangest SNL experience and said he talked with Sweeney before filming. Because the Yahoo page was inaccessible and a full interview transcript was not verified, those details should be treated as indirect reporting—not as a verbatim quote from Yang. What happens in “Bowen’s Straight”
Sydney Sweeney hosted the Saturday Night Live episode that aired March 2, 2024. In “Bowen’s Straight,” Sweeney plays a woman who develops a crush on Yang’s character, is told that he is straight, and eventually hooks up with him before he leaves her. The intimate encounter is part of the comedy sketch’s fictional plot, not a report of something that happened between the performers. The Guardian’s episode recap identifies the sketch, while TheWrap’s account describes the premise and links to its video.
Why the headline needs a distinction
The available account connects two separate points: Yang reportedly spoke with Sweeney before filming, and he found playing straight for the scene especially strange. It does not establish that Colbert’s interview described a real-life intimate encounter, nor does the accessible evidence confirm the exact phrasing Yang used. The story is about a comic performance and a conversation around filming it.
