The Weekend Update segment explicitly told viewers to leave Roan alone and give her time for her mental health, though some viewers felt its comedic framing made light of her concerns.
What Yang said in the sketch
Yang appeared as Moo Deng, the viral pygmy hippo, during the SNL season 50 premiere on September 28, 2024. The character joked that a public figure’s work and visibility do not entitle fans to photos or personal access, echoing Roan’s comments about invasive fan behavior and the pressures of sudden fame. The Independent’s account of the segment includes the sketch’s direct defense: “By the way, leave her alone. Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health. We both deserve patience and grace.”
Why some viewers criticized it
The sketch aired one day after Roan canceled scheduled All Things Go festival appearances in New York and Washington, D.C. She said the situation had become overwhelming and that she needed time to prioritize her health. E! News reported her statement: “Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I am really feeling it.” E! News covered the cancellations and Yang’s response.
Against that backdrop, some viewers interpreted the sketch as making fun of Roan’s concerns about fame, fan attention, and mental health. The comedic premise and timing shaped that reaction, even though the character’s words included an explicit request that people respect her boundaries. Coverage also noted that the criticism stood out because Yang had recently spoken with Roan in an interview.

Yang responded to a Variety headline characterizing the sketch as mocking Roan. As reported by E! News, he wrote on Instagram Story: “Oh geez ‘mocks’? If my personal stance and the piece aren’t absolutely clear in terms of supporting [Roan] then there it is I guess.” He added: “Everything she has ever asked for has been reasonable and even then we can connect it to another story about boundaries or whatever.”
Vanity Fair reported that the Variety headline was later changed. Yang’s clarification makes his stated intent plain: he considered the sketch supportive of Roan’s requests, not a rejection of them.

Yang had expressed support before the sketch
On August 19, 2024, Interview magazine published a conversation between Yang and Roan about fame and the difficulties of sudden stardom. In that discussion, Yang expressed admiration for her work and support for her. The interview provides context for his later insistence that both his personal stance and the sketch supported her.
