Boruto Chapter 9 Preview Shows His Growth—and Makes Kawaki Look Outmatched

The Chapter 9 preview gives a glimpse of Boruto’s growth as he evades Kawaki’s black rods, but one exchange is not an official ranking or a lasting verdict on either character.

The official one-page preview for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 9 shows Boruto evading Kawaki’s black rods. That exchange gives readers a striking glimpse of Boruto’s growth, but it is not an official power ranking: the claim that Kawaki is “weak” is an interpretation of one preview image at a specific point in the story.

What the official Chapter 9 preview showed

The official Naruto site announced the Chapter 9 preview on April 16, 2024. It said the chapter was scheduled to arrive April 19, Japan Standard Time, in V Jump’s super-sized June edition. Coverage of the preview described an exchange in which Kawaki sends black rods toward Boruto and Boruto evades them.

The visible moment is compelling because it places Kawaki’s attack and Boruto’s response side by side. It suggests Boruto can handle this particular threat in the scene; it does not establish a numerical measure of either character’s strength or a formal ranking.

How Boruto’s growth fits the story

The series’ setup gives the evasion added weight. In the official synopsis for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Vol. 1, a jutsu switches Boruto and Kawaki’s lives. Branded a traitor, Boruto goes on the run and trains with Sasuke before returning as Konoha comes under attack.

That history makes it reasonable to read the preview as a sign that Boruto has developed during his absence. But the preview alone does not establish exactly how he avoids the rods or what method, if any, he uses to anticipate them. The safest conclusion is about the result shown: he evades the attack in this exchange.

Why Kawaki looks weak—and what that judgment means

The “weak Kawaki” framing comes from comparing the attack with Boruto’s visible response. Kawaki’s rods do not connect in the depicted moment, while Boruto appears composed enough to avoid them. That contrast can make Kawaki look outmatched in this specific encounter.

It is still an editorial judgment, not an official declaration that Kawaki is weak overall. A single preview image cannot establish a broad or lasting power gap, and the April 2024 comparison should not be treated as a current assessment of either character. Nor does the preview confirm predictions that Kawaki will eventually become Boruto’s equal; those are speculation about where the story might go.

How current is this comparison?

This is a Chapter 9 story point from April 2024, not current chapter news. VIZ’s chapter catalog lists Chapter 37 with a September 17, 2026 date. The preview remains useful for understanding how Boruto’s return was presented at that moment, but its portrayal of Kawaki should not be carried forward as a conclusion about later chapters.
