Border Report Live discusses the making and purpose of Los Tejanos: A 500-Year History, a 118-minute documentary that traces Tejano history in South Texas from the early 1500s to the present. The news segment features executive producer Richard Stillman and producer, narrator, and co-cinematographer Jeri Wachter, with Sandra Sanchez hosting. The film’s scope and historical themes below reflect the filmmakers’ and festival’s descriptions.
What the Border Report Live segment covers
The segment focuses on the filmmakers’ account of how they made the documentary and why they believe Tejano history matters. It is a discussion about the film, rather than the documentary itself. Border Report identifies the interview participants as executive producer Richard Stillman and producer, narrator, and co-cinematographer Jeri Wachter; Sandra Sanchez hosts the program. Border Report’s account, updated October 2, 2026, reports that the film won Best Documentary at the 2026 South Texas International Film Festival and was a top-two finalist at the Mexican American Film and Television Festival in March.
What the documentary says it covers
Los Tejanos: A 500-Year History is described by its official site and production company as a 118-minute documentary tracing Tejano history in South Texas from the early 1500s through the present. Its five-century framing is the film’s stated historical scope, not a demographic statistic.
The film’s described approach combines oral histories and archival research with contributions from historians, educators, archivists, artists, ranchers, musicians, policymakers, and community leaders. The South Texas International Film Festival synopsis highlights the vaquero tradition, Tejana women’s leadership, and the community’s cultural, economic, and political place in Texas and the United States. These descriptions establish the film’s framing and selected themes, not independent verification of every historical interpretation.
