A literary puff is promotional praise for a book, usually printed on its jacket or in a publisher’s publicity. Whether it is also literary criticism depends on what criticism is taken to mean: a puff may lack the analysis expected of a critical study, yet still describe and evaluate a book for the public. Ross Wilson’s essay, written around the 2015 Booker Prize announcement, explores that unresolved boundary.
What is a literary puff?
A puff is praise intended to attract attention to a book. It commonly appears as a jacket blurb or in a publisher’s press release. Wilson reports that the Oxford English Dictionary records both a disparaging sense—“inflated or unmerited praise or commendation”—and a more neutral sense: publicity-generating review or comment, including “an extravagantly laudatory advertisement or review.” The word itself therefore carries the suspicion that praise has been inflated, even when it may also convey a judgment.
Wilson traces the promotional sense of “puff” to around the beginning of the eighteenth century, when it referred to publishers’ efforts to publicize books beyond traditional advertising. The practice is not simply praise placed beside a book after the fact: it belongs to the machinery by which books are presented to prospective readers.
Promotion in the historical record
As an example of the period’s concern with promotion, Wilson recounts an 1848 attack in the Western Literary Messenger on author George Lippard. The periodical said his career illustrated “what well-directed and energetic puffing can do for an author.” The remark, quoted by Wilson, makes puffing sound like a force that can shape literary reputation as well as sales.

Why have critics objected to puffing?
The central concern is independence. If a review or endorsement exists to sell a book, its praise may be shaped by commercial purpose, personal loyalty, or the expectations of a publisher rather than by an effort to assess the work fairly. Critics have accordingly treated puffing as a threat to independent judgment and to a literary culture in which readers can distinguish evaluation from publicity.

Wilson invokes George Orwell’s warning that “the novel is being shouted out of existence.” Orwell described the hack review as “a sort of commercial necessity, like the blurb on the dust-jacket, of which it is merely an extension.” The point is not just that some praise is excessive: promotional noise can make it harder for readers to find considered criticism.
Wyndham Lewis’s complaint, quoted in a 2008 Guardian Books Blog article, similarly evokes an “era of puff and blurb in place of criticism” and objects to reviewers’ superlatives. It is another expression of the worry, not a complete account of the history of literary puffing.

Can promotional praise be criticism?
It depends on the definition. Wilson sets two accounts of criticism alongside each other. M. H. Abrams calls criticism “the overall term for studies concerned with defining, classifying, analysing, interpreting, and evaluating works of literature.” By that standard, the brief endorsement on a jacket is generally not a study: it does not undertake the sustained work of defining, interpreting, or analyzing a book.
Peter Uwe Hohendahl offers a broader description: criticism is “public communication on literature comprising both description and evaluation.” On this account, a puff can count as criticism if it communicates something about a literary work and judges it, even if it is brief and promotional. The disagreement is partly about the puff, but also about whether criticism must be an extended, independent study or can include shorter public judgments.

How to read a book blurb
Rather than treating every endorsement as either serious criticism or empty advertising, readers can ask what work the praise actually does. These questions help separate useful judgment from approval that serves mainly to promote:
- Critical substance: Does the blurb say anything specific about the book—its language, ideas, form, or effects—or offer only superlatives?
- Commercial context: Who selected and published the praise, and how directly does it serve the book’s promotion?
- Independence: Is the writer a friend, paid reviewer, or otherwise connected to the author or publisher in a way that bears on impartiality?
- Reader value: Does the comment help a reader understand what the book offers, or merely announce that it has been approved?
These questions do not produce an automatic verdict. They make visible the differences that the word “puff” can conceal: a short comment can have critical content while being part of a sales pitch, and promotional purpose does not by itself prove that every judgment in it is worthless.

Is a puff ever an honest form of praise?
Wilson presents a qualified defense through Nathaniel Parker Willis, who rejects the idea that a critic must pretend to be impartial toward a friend’s work. Willis writes: “But if we love a man (as we do many, thank God, whom we are called upon to criticise), we pick out the gold that is inlaid in his book, and leave to his enemies to find the brass and tinsel. And if that’s not fair, we don’t very much care – for we scorn to be impartial.” He draws a boundary at paid praise, while allowing that affection may guide what a critic chooses to emphasize.
That defense does not remove the conflict between affection, independence, and promotion. Instead, it points to a more nuanced question than whether a blurb is “real” criticism: what does it disclose, whose interests shape it, and how should readers weigh its judgment?
What the Booker example shows—and what it does not
Wilson uses publicity around the 2015 Booker Prize announcement as an entry point; Marlon James won that year. This is historical context for the essay’s argument, not a current account of the prize. The broader issue is how literary attention is made and sold: prize announcements, reviews, blurbs, and publicity can all help a book reach readers, while also shaping which judgments become most visible.
Literary puffs are entangled with commercial imperatives, but they can still offer imperfect glimpses of literary judgment. Whether one calls them criticism turns on the definition: a puff falls short of criticism understood as sustained study, yet may qualify as public description and evaluation. Wilson leaves that tension unresolved rather than treating all blurbs as either criticism or mere public relations.
