Bonnie Raitt was 75 in 2024; born November 8, 1949, she is 76 as of October 4, 2026. Her life in music runs from a childhood guitar and Cambridge blues scene to the breakthrough of Nick of Time, decades of activism, and the 2023 Grammy-winning song “Just Like That.” This photo-led timeline traces those turning points.
Los Angeles childhood: a guitar at eight
Raised in Los Angeles in a family that valued the arts, Quaker traditions, and social activism, Raitt grew up around music. Her father was Broadway singer John Raitt; her mother, Marge Goddard, was a pianist and singer. A Stella guitar given to her as a Christmas present when she was eight set her on a musical path. Bonnie Raitt’s official biography describes the early mix of music and social conscience that would shape her career.

Cambridge: folk, politics, and the blues
In the late 1960s, Raitt moved east and attended Harvard/Radcliffe, studying Social Relations and African Studies. Cambridge’s folk and political communities brought together interests that remained part of her work. Her route into blues began earlier: hearing Blues at Newport 1963 at age 14 helped spark her interest in the genre and in slide guitar.

Warner Bros. released Raitt’s self-titled debut in 1971. She recorded six albums over the next seven years. Sweet Forgiveness (1977) included her first hit single: a Memphis/R&B arrangement of Del Shannon’s “Runaway.” The recording established a pattern she would revisit throughout her career—bringing blues sensibility to material that crossed genre lines.

Activism alongside the music
Advocacy was not a late-career addition to Raitt’s story. Her official biography records benefit performances and campaigning against the war in Central America, participation in the anti-apartheid project Sun City, and performances at the 1980 No Nukes concerts. She also co-founded Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) and supported environmental protection and the rights of women and Native Americans.
These causes ran alongside her recording and touring work. A photo selection from this period can show that public life without implying that one image represents every campaign.

After signing with Capitol in 1989, Raitt won four Grammy Awards in 1990. Nick of Time reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and later received five-time platinum certification from the RIAA, according to her Recording Academy profile. The album’s success brought a much wider audience to the blues-rooted singer and guitarist.
Her 1991 album Luck of the Draw produced two of her best-known songs, “Something to Talk About” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Together, these releases mark a commercial peak without ending her long recording career.

Choosing photographs for a life-in-pictures feature
A compelling sequence should make the chronology visible: early family and guitar years, Cambridge and blues performances, the 1971 debut, the 1989–91 breakthrough, activism, the 2000 induction, and the later work around Just Like That…. Use captions to identify what a photograph actually shows and when it was made, rather than asking the image to carry more history than it can support.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the photographer or archive credit and the photograph’s date.
- Verify reproduction rights with the image owner or an authorized archive; a photograph appearing on an artist’s site is not, by itself, proof that it can be republished.
- Keep captions specific. Distinguish an album-era portrait from a documented event photograph.
