Rather than build toward a conventional disaster explanation, the film follows Jenai and Riley as they respond differently to isolation—and to the possibility that the altered world may be all that remains.
What is Bokeh about?
While vacationing in Iceland, Jenai and Riley see a flash in the sky. The next morning, they discover that other people have disappeared. They must manage the practical demands of survival while confronting what the event means for their relationship and their understanding of the world. The film’s official description frames the story as both a struggle to survive and an effort to reconcile what has happened.
The central tension is between Jenai’s need to find an explanation and connection, and Riley’s greater willingness to accept the changed circumstances and make a life within them. That difference gives the film its intimate, speculative focus: the question is not only what happened, but how two people choose to live when the familiar social world is gone.
What does the title Bokeh mean?
Bokeh is a photography term for “the subjective aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image,” as the official film page defines it. The page connects that photographic idea to the characters’ changing priorities with the line, “In life, we choose what we focus on and what we blur.” As Jenai and Riley face a radically different world, what each chooses to attend to—and what each sets aside—becomes part of the story.

Why is the film set in Iceland?
Bokeh was shot entirely in Iceland. In a 2017 interview, the filmmakers said collectively that they wanted to use the land to tell the story, and that the colors and landscapes change as the story progresses. The setting is therefore part of the film’s storytelling, not just a backdrop for the couple’s isolation.
