Bodkin is a seven-episode Netflix mystery thriller about a journalist, a true-crime podcaster and a researcher investigating old disappearances in a fictional Irish town. Its blend of oddball comedy and sinister mystery can become engrossing, but it takes time to settle into its rhythm—and its take on rural Irish life has drawn sharply different responses.
What is Bodkin about?
Gilbert (Will Forte), an American true-crime podcaster, arrives in the small town of Bodkin to investigate disappearances linked to an annual Samhain festival. Journalist Dove (Siobhán Cullen) is drawn into the project reluctantly, while researcher Emmy (Robyn Cara) helps the mismatched trio pursue the story. Netflix describes the series as a mystery about disappearances from decades earlier; the festival connects the investigation to events from 25 years before.
Samhain provides the story’s seasonal frame. Netflix Tudum describes it as a traditional Gaelic fall festival marking the end of the harvest and the approach of darker days. The series’ particular town, festival mystery and disappearances are invented, not a retelling of a real case. Co-showrunner Alex Metcalf puts it plainly: “Not a real story, not a real place.” Netflix Tudum’s production notes also say the creators deliberately avoided basing the story on an actual true-crime case.
Does the mystery-comedy balance work?
The show’s appeal lies in the friction between a serious investigation and the absurdity of the people pursuing it. The trio’s conflicting instincts give the story room for jokes and eccentric turns without making the mystery purely a gag. The Irish Independent called the result an offbeat blend of the silly and sinister, and found it gripping. The Guardian likewise praised the mix of mystery, humor and oddity once the series finds its footing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That qualification matters: the opening stretch may feel slow. The Guardian says the show finds its groove by the third episode, making the first hour more worthwhile in retrospect. Viewers looking for an immediately propulsive crime thriller may need patience; those willing to let the characters and tone come into focus may find the later momentum rewarding.
How does it portray Irish culture?
Bodkin uses a fictional rural setting and familiar ideas about Ireland as part of its comic and mysterious atmosphere. Critics disagree about whether the series successfully exposes those clichés or reinforces them. The Irish Independent sees the stereotypes as material the show sets up and disrupts. The Irish Times argues that, despite its apparent effort to challenge romanticized notions of Ireland, the series reproduces familiar rural-Ireland caricatures and does not do justice to west Cork.

Those are distinct critical readings, not a measure of what all Irish viewers think. The disagreement is worth weighing alongside the show’s entertaining premise: its eccentricity may be a strength for some viewers and, for others, a reason its setting feels reductive.
Is Bodkin based on a true crime or real podcast?
No. Netflix’s production material says the town, characters and mystery were invented, and that the series was not built around a real disappearance. Its true-crime premise is fictional. The creators have said they were interested in the ethics of turning tragedy into entertainment; that theme is an intention behind the story, not evidence that the events depicted actually happened.

Bodkin is an unusual, often funny mystery that becomes more engaging as its tone and ensemble click into place. Its slow start is a real hurdle, and its use of Irish rural clichés is contested rather than universally successful. If you enjoy crime stories that mix suspense with eccentric humor, it is worth trying; if you want a brisk procedural or a consistently convincing portrait of rural Ireland, it may not be your match.
