Spoiler warning: this article covers the full ending of Netflix’s seven-episode mystery Bodkin. The finale resolves the Samhain disappearances in one sweep, tying together a killing from the 1990s, a car in a bog, a missing mother, and an eel-smuggling plot in the present day. Below is what happens, in the order the show reveals it, followed by what the cast and creators say about the three leads at the end.
The bog car: how Malachy and Greta died
The disappearances that drive the series trace back to a single night in the 1990s, and the sequence of events is worth following step by step. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer by Jean Bentley, published May 15, 2024, lays out the chain.
Teddy and Malachy
Teddy killed Malachy with a brick during a fight over Fiona. That act starts everything that follows, because the body then has to be dealt with.
Sergeant Power and Greta
Sergeant Power was on his way to dispose of Malachy’s body when he accidentally hit Greta. He then put her in the trunk alongside Malachy and drove the car into a bog. Sergeant Power’s attempt to conceal the first death is what turns a disappearance into a second death, and it is the reason the bog car is central to the mystery.

Fiona, Sean and Seamus
Fiona is not among the bodies in the bog. She escaped to a convent on Inish Mac Thiere, where she hid among beekeeping nuns. She was pregnant, and she died giving birth to Sean. Mrs. O’Shea, who had left the convent, raised him.
Who is Sean’s father?
Seamus is Sean’s biological father. The explainer also identifies Seamus as Jackie McFadden, a Northern Irish smuggler with a rivalry against the McArdles. That identity is what links the local mystery to the smuggling plot in the finale.

The eel plot: the buyers were Interpol
Seamus’s eel business attracts supposed Japanese buyers. The finale reveals that they are Interpol agents investigating smuggling. The reveal widens the story from a small-town mystery into an international investigation, and it explains why the eel trade has been a recurring thread rather than background detail.
The festival explosion and who is hurt
The explosion at the festival destroys the eel trailer. Sean loses his thumb. According to the ending explainer, no other people are harmed. The blast is the last major event of the finale, and it is the moment the past and present collide most literally.

Samhain as the show’s structure
Samhain is pronounced “sah-win” in the ending explainer. It is an old Celtic festival associated with the dead returning. The series overview, published by Netflix Tudum on May 7, 2024, frames it as a traditional Gaelic autumn festival marking the end of the harvest and the darker days ahead. The show uses the festival as its organising device: creator Jez Scharf says, in the ending explainer, “All these characters have things that they’re running from, or ghosts that they’re running from, and essentially it all [comes] together at the festival.”
Where Gilbert, Dove and Emmy end up
The three investigators approach the case differently, and the finale changes each of them in a different way. The table below sets out their investigative styles and the changes described by the actors in Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer.

| Character (actor) | Investigative method | Change by the finale |
|---|---|---|
| Gilbert Power (Will Forte), podcaster | Rapport-building | Per Forte, Gilbert becomes more realistic and honest with himself. The explainer also describes his growing self-questioning. |
| Dove Maloney (Siobhán Cullen), investigative journalist | Hard-nosed reporting | Per Cullen, Dove is shifted for the better, influenced by Emmy’s positivity and her colleagues. |
| Emmy Sizergh (Robyn Cara), researcher | Research and growing confidence in the field | Per Cara, Emmy learns to be a better journalist and becomes more daring. |
Gilbert’s recorder going into the water is the finale’s most striking image of him. Neither the official explainer nor the cast remarks assign it a fixed meaning, so it is best read as an image of his self-questioning rather than as a stated decision. The finale does not establish what career he chooses next.

A Collider cast interview on the ending could not be verified for this article, so the cast remarks here come from Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer. Siobhán Cullen, who plays Dove, offers the clearest summary of the series’ structure: “You need seven episodes to be able to explain.” That structure is why the reveals arrive in a sequence rather than all at once, and why the bog car, the convent and the eel plot are each given time before the finale ties them together.
Is Bodkin based on a true story?
No. Netflix Tudum’s series overview, published May 7, 2024, describes the show as fictional. The creators say they deliberately made a fake town and fake people, and they avoided building the mystery on a real case. Scharf’s words are: “Not a real story, not a real place.” He also names S-Town as the true-crime podcast that inspired the show most. The series premiered on Netflix on May 9, 2024, with seven episodes. Netflix’s official title page lists download availability, but catalog access and subscription terms vary by region and can change, so check your local listing before watching.
What the finale settles and what it leaves open
The finale settles the central mystery: who killed Malachy, how Greta died, what happened to Fiona, who Sean’s father is, and what the eel buyers were actually doing. What it leaves open is the trio’s professional future. Netflix’s finale synopsis says they embrace new beginnings, but it does not specify what those beginnings are for Gilbert.
