The completed film credits Saget and Berkeley as directors. Sean Bradley, Tara Billik, and Berkeley are credited as producers; Netflix’s release announcement also names Saget, Kevin S. Bright, Morgan Neville, and Caitrin Rogers as executive producers.
How did the documentary’s production unfold?
2018: Saget begins the project
Saget’s official website says work on the documentary began in 2018. In an interview published that October, Mull described Saget as directing a film about his comedy and painting. Mull said interviews had already been conducted with Steve Martin, Fred Willard, and Eric Idle, with archival footage and online video also being gathered. Those were details about the project at that point, not confirmation that each person appears in the released film.

In that interview, Mull said: “So far we’ve done interviews with Steve Martin and Fred Willard and Eric Idle, and then they have a lot of old footage and YouTube stuff, and they’re going to assemble all that.” The exchange appeared in WRAL’s October 4, 2018, republication of a New York Times interview.
2022: Berkeley takes over after Saget’s death
Saget died in 2022, three years into filming, according to Netflix’s account of the production. Saget’s official site says Berkeley took over as director that year. The final film retains both men’s directing credit.

Netflix quoted Berkeley describing how precarious the project’s survival felt: “It really was this movie that should have gone away many many many times,” he said at a Netflix event. “So it’s a miracle that it’s here.”
2024–2026: Mull dies before the release
Mull died in 2024, two years after Saget, and did not live to see the film’s release. The Independent reported that Mull died in June 2024 at age 80. Netflix released Who Is Martin Mull? on October 7, 2026, and said it was available on the service that day.

Who finished the film, and where can you watch it?
Neil Berkeley continued the documentary after Saget’s death and shares the directing credit with him. Netflix’s October 7, 2026 announcement and fall film listing identify the completed title as a Netflix release. Availability, streaming options, and language support can vary by region; check Netflix’s title page for the options available where you watch.
