Bob Odenkirk thinks Steve Carell was a better fit for Michael Scott because Carell could be “genuinely fun,” while Odenkirk’s comic persona carries an earnest seriousness that can make audiences look for something darker. That is Odenkirk’s own explanation—not a documented statement from the show’s casting team.
What Odenkirk says about the audition
Odenkirk discussed the audition on the Office Ladies podcast. “I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy,” he said, describing himself as “oddly earnest.” He believes that quality was part of why Carell got the role.
Odenkirk drew a contrast between his own seriousness and Carell’s ability to be “genuinely fun.” In his view, his earnestness can lead an audience to anticipate darkness—a quality he considers useful in drama, but less suited to a character whose comedy depends on lightness. He framed that as his personal reading of the outcome, not as an objective verdict on either actor.
What Jenna Fischer remembers about the test
Fischer, who was auditioning for Pam, recalled preparing for the test auditions with Odenkirk, who was testing for Michael Scott. “And I remember that test and it really came down to you and Steve Carell,” she told him. Her recollection adds firsthand context to Odenkirk’s account of the final choice.

Odenkirk’s reaction to Carell getting the role
Odenkirk expressed no resentment about the decision. He told Fischer and co-host Angela Kinsey that The Office was “exactly what it needed to be,” praising what they and Carell did on the series. His comments suggest he sees Carell’s performance as the right fit for the show that was made.
Odenkirk later appeared on The Office
Odenkirk eventually guest-starred as Mark Franks, a Philadelphia real-estate manager, in the season-nine episode “Moving On.” In the episode’s setup, Franks is presented as resembling Michael Scott during Pam’s interview. The role gives his near-miss a small on-screen echo, but it is separate from the casting decision for Michael.

Fischer’s recollection supports that the test audition came down to Odenkirk and Carell. Odenkirk offers his own explanation of why Carell may have suited the part better. The sources reporting this conversation do not establish an official rationale from a producer or casting director, so his view should not be mistaken for the show’s formal explanation.
