Bob Marley: One Love earned about $14 million in North America on its February 14, 2024 opening day. Paramount described it as the biggest midweek Valentine’s Day opener, a record claim reported at the time by Screen Daily. The film went on to open at No. 1 with $27.7 million for the weekend—but the evidence does not show that it ended an industry-wide theater drought.
What record did the film break on opening day?
Bob Marley: One Love opened in theaters on February 14, 2024, according to Paramount. Screen Daily reported a North American opening-day gross of about $14 million and attributed the description “biggest midweek Valentine’s Day opener” to Paramount. The record claim is therefore specific: it concerns a midweek Valentine’s Day opening, not the biggest opening day for a music biopic overall.

Screen Daily also reported $4.9 million across ten international markets on Wednesday, including $2.3 million in the UK, where the report described the result as a music-biopic opening-day record. Those international figures are separate from the North American total.
How much did it make over opening weekend?
The Associated Press reported that the movie debuted at No. 1 with $27.7 million over its opening weekend. That weekend figure covers a different period from the roughly $14 million earned on Wednesday, February 14; the two should not be treated as competing estimates of the same result.

Paramount forecast $51 million over the film’s first six days, including an estimate for Presidents’ Day Monday, AP reported. That was a forecast, not the reported opening-weekend result.
Did One Love end the theater drought?
Not on the evidence available. AP characterized the first two months of 2024 as a box-office drought, noting that no movie had crossed $100 million domestically during that period. That describes a weak start to the year, not a confirmed industry-wide drought that One Love ended. The film’s No. 1 weekend was a strong opening, but it does not by itself establish a turnaround for theaters or the wider box office.

What did the film earn later?
On April 11, 2024, Paramount said the film had grossed more than $175 million worldwide in announcing its arrival on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada beginning April 12. This is a studio-reported total as of that announcement, not a live or necessarily final worldwide figure.
The Numbers lists $96,981,216 in domestic box office and a Paramount Home Video release dated March 19, 2024. That database listing is a domestic figure; it should not be confused with Paramount’s later worldwide statement.

What period of Marley’s life does the movie cover?
AP describes the story as focusing on 1976–1978, including the making of Exodus and the One Love concert. Paramount’s official synopsis presents a broader account of Marley’s life and music. Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Bob Marley, Lashana Lynch plays Rita Marley, and James Norton plays Chris Blackwell, according to Paramount Global Content.
Speaking about the film, Paramount Motion Picture Group co-president Mike Ireland said: “The audience is the ultimate arbiter of every movie and everything you put into the world.”
