The 1974 Live Recordings is a 27-CD archival collection documenting Bob Dylan performing with The Band on their 1974 tour. Released by Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings on September 20, 2024, it contains 431 tracks, including 417 previously unreleased performances, according to the Official Bob Dylan Site’s announcement.
What does the 27-CD collection cover?
The box set brings together professionally recorded Dylan performances backed by The Band during the 1974 tour. Its opening disc documents the January 3, 1974, show at Chicago Stadium. The collection does not include The Band performing on its own, according to Sony Music Japan’s product information.
The Official Bob Dylan Site described the tour as Dylan’s first return to touring in eight years and a reunion with The Band, which had last toured with him in 1966. The announcement says the musicians played 30 dates in 42 days, often performing two sets in a day, before an average audience of 18,500. Those are figures published by the site in 2024.
Recalling the reception in Chicago, guitarist and songwriter Robbie Robertson said, “What happened tonight in Chicago is so reassuring for us.” The official announcement attributes the recollection to Newsweek and places it in the context of the group’s poorly received previous tour with Dylan in Europe. The announcement also quotes Rolling Stone writer Ben Fong-Torres describing the performances as “searing and soaring, unified and precise…excellent in itself.”

How many tracks are included, and how were they recorded?
The 431 tracks include 417 previously unreleased performances. The collection draws on several recording sources rather than a single uniform tape format:
- Quarter-inch tape and cassette: Early recordings were captured as stereo soundboard mixes.
- 16-track tape: Later shows were recorded on 16-track tape. The Official Bob Dylan Site says 133 recordings from these tapes were newly mixed for the set.
- Surviving soundboard recordings: The announcement says the collection includes all surviving soundboard recordings.
Elizabeth Nelson wrote new liner notes for the collection. The figures for tracks and newly mixed recordings are those given in the 2024 official announcement; they describe the release, not an independent assessment of the recordings.

How is the box different from the companion vinyl set?
Third Man Records announced a separate colored-vinyl release, The 1974 Live Recordings – The Missing Songs From Before the Flood. It contains selected versions of tour songs that were not included on the 1974 live album Before the Flood. The announcement described it as three LPs and one 7-inch, offered through Third Man’s Vault mail-order service at the time.
