Blue Origin’s April 14, 2025, New Shepard flight carrying Katy Perry and five other women returned safely after about 10–11 minutes. It drew criticism as an exclusive celebrity spectacle, but the available reporting does not establish that the mission was a financial or operational failure. The bigger story is the tension between its symbolism, its exclusivity and Blue Origin’s stated ambition to make access to space less costly.
What happened on Katy Perry’s Blue Origin flight?
On April 14, 2025, Blue Origin launched six women aboard its New Shepard suborbital vehicle from West Texas. The passengers were Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen and Kerianne Flynn. They returned safely.
The Associated Press reported that the flight reached 66 miles (107 kilometers) and lasted about 10 minutes, including a few minutes of weightlessness. The Washington Post described an 11-minute mission and said the crew spent less than half of it above the Kármán line. Those are the outlets’ reported durations, not a basis for claiming a longer orbital journey. Associated Press coverage; The Washington Post’s account.
Why was the all-women crew notable?
The AP called it the first U.S. spaceflight with women filling every seat. It also reported that the only other all-female crew in the 64 years of human spaceflight at the time was Valentina Tereshkova’s solo 1963 flight. This was therefore a six-person all-women commercial flight; Tereshkova flew alone.

The milestone mattered in a field where women remained underrepresented. The AP reported that women made up “barely 15%” of the more than 700 people who had traveled into space, a figure describing the situation in its 2025 report—not a current statistic. After the flight, Perry said, “We weren’t just taking up space. We were making space for the future.” That was her postflight characterization of the trip, not evidence that the mission changed access to space.
How much did Katy Perry’s Blue Origin trip cost—and who paid?
Blue Origin did not disclose the cost of the NS-31 flight or who paid for it. The Washington Post reported that the company’s website listed a $150,000 deposit to reserve a seat on an upcoming flight. That is a deposit, not a confirmed final fare and not the cost of Perry’s mission. The outlet also reported that a seat on Blue Origin’s 2021 inaugural flight sold at auction for $28 million; that was a one-time auction result, not a typical ticket price. Without a disclosed mission cost, payer or company economics, there is no sound basis for calculating whether NS-31 made or lost money—or for comparing its cost with Perry’s wealth or career revenue. Criticism of an exclusive, conspicuous trip is a separate judgment from those unanswered financial questions.
Was the Blue Origin flight really a flop?
“Flop” is not established as a measured result by the reporting available here. The vehicle completed the flight and its passengers returned safely, while the mission attracted criticism on social media from people who called it a publicity stunt or questioned the value of an exclusive trip. The Washington Post quoted actor Olivia Munn criticizing the expense and social priorities. These are examples of public reaction and opinion, not representative polling or proof of commercial failure. The Washington Post’s coverage.

The criticism points to a real tension: the flight offered a highly visible representation milestone, but access was limited to a small group on a short suborbital journey. Its public spectacle was much larger than the experience’s duration. That contrast can support a critique of the event’s priorities without turning criticism into evidence that the mission failed operationally or financially.

Blue Origin says its mission is to build a road to space for the benefit of Earth and identifies reducing the cost of access to space as an objective. The company says reusable New Shepard and New Glenn vehicles were designed for reuse. Those statements describe the company’s aims and design claims; they do not establish that costs have fallen, or disclose the economics of NS-31. Blue Origin’s mission and company overview.

That gap between ambition and disclosed evidence is central to the broader story. A celebrity flight can make commercial spaceflight visible, but its symbolism alone cannot show whether access is becoming affordable or broadly available. The company’s stated goal should be judged against demonstrated outcomes, not treated as proof that the goal has already been achieved.
What does FAA licensing mean for passenger safety?
The Federal Aviation Administration licenses commercial space launches and verifies that vehicles operate as intended, but federal law limits its authority to regulate the safety of people aboard. The FAA requires written informed consent that includes risk information and notice that the government has not certified the vehicle as safe for carrying humans. As the agency puts it: “The FAA does not certify launch or reentry vehicles as safe for carrying humans.” Licensing should not be confused with passenger-safety certification. Blue Origin’s homepage included a June 30, 2026 update from CEO Dave Limp about recovery and rebuild work after a May 2026 New Glenn anomaly, with the stated aim of returning to flight that year. New Glenn is a separate program from the New Shepard vehicle used for NS-31. The update concerns Blue Origin’s wider trajectory; it does not establish that the 2025 Katy Perry flight failed.
