Bloom County was Berkeley Breathed’s daily newspaper comic, running from December 8, 1980, to August 6, 1989. It introduced characters including Opus the Penguin and Bill the Cat, then gave way to two Sunday strips: Outland and Opus. Read together, the three titles trace Breathed’s newspaper-comics career, but they are separate periods with different schedules—not one uninterrupted daily serial.
What is Bloom County about?
Bloom County combines character-led humor with topical satire. Its ensemble includes Opus the Penguin, Bill the Cat, Cutter John, Michael Binkley, Milo Bloom and Steve Dallas, among others. The strip’s newspaper setting let Breathed respond to current events, while its fanciful characters carried jokes beyond straightforward political commentary.
IDW Publishing dates the original daily run from December 8, 1980, through August 6, 1989, and reports that it appeared in more than 1,200 newspapers worldwide. That circulation figure is the publisher’s account. IDW also says the first paperback collection, Loose Tails, sold more than one million copies; that, too, is a publisher-reported figure, not an independently audited total. IDW’s 2022 announcement gives the dates, cast and figures.
What other newspaper comics did Berkeley Breathed create?
After the original Bloom County run, Breathed continued with two Sunday-only strips. The Los Angeles Times described the later titles and their schedules in its 2009 profile.

| Opus | 2003–2008 | Sunday strip centered on Opus. |
In 2015, Bloom County returned with new strips, according to IDW’s 2022 announcement. That confirms a revival, not a particular present-day schedule or status. Breathed also created picture books and worked in film, but those are separate parts of his career rather than additional newspaper strips. For the chronology of Outland and Opus, see the Los Angeles Times profile.
How did the strips’ humor change with time?
The newspaper format gave Bloom County a close connection to the headlines of its day. Breathed told the Los Angeles Times, “There was humor that relied on headlines from just a few days before.” He also recalled, “I found it deeply annoying to look back on Michael Dukakis cartoons.” The same topical immediacy that made the strip responsive can make specific references less familiar to readers encountering it years later.

What is the reading order for Bloom County, Outland and Opus?
For the newspaper-comics chronology, start with the original Bloom County, continue to Outland, and then read Opus. This is a sequence of related strips, not a single continuous story: Bloom County ran daily, while the later titles were Sunday strips.
For a chronological start to the original strip, IDW’s Bloom County Library: Book One collects the 1980–1982 strips in order. IDW announced it in 2022 as a 288-page, full-color softcover, ISBN 978-1-68405-928-7, on sale September 6, 2022, and described it as the first of five editions intended to collect the original run. Those details describe the announced edition; check a current listing for availability, format and contents.

A 2010 Publishers Weekly interview offers context for why a chronological archive differs from older annual collections. Asked about selections in prior collections, Breathed said, “Well, 80% of them never got reproduced – I was never terribly confident in my work, to tell you the truth, and we always edited it down to the best-of every year.” This is Breathed’s retrospective account of those collections, not a general count of every edition. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose a collection?
- For the beginning: Look for a chronological collection that starts with the original Bloom County. IDW’s Bloom County Library: Book One covers 1980–1982.
- For a broad archive: Check whether the edition is chronological and what years it includes; a “best of” or annual selection may omit strips.
- For later Sunday strips: Search specifically for Outland or Opus collections, and confirm the listing’s contents and format rather than assuming it matches a daily-strip archive.
