They also establish that Retsu Unohana was once Yachiru, the first Kenpachi, before joining the squads and later leading Squad 4. The profiles do not identify all thirteen founders, so a complete roster cannot be verified from these official pages alone.
Who were the original captains?
“Original captains” refers to the founding generation of the Gotei 13, not the lineup most familiar from the main story. The official character profiles consulted here establish Yamamoto’s founding leadership and provide important history for Unohana, but they do not name and profile all thirteen founders as a group. It would therefore be misleading to present a full founder-by-founder list as confirmed by these sources.
The clearest starting point is Yamamoto’s official character profile, which identifies him as the founder of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads and their first Head Captain and Squad 1 captain. That makes him the one founding captain whose role is directly spelled out in the material cited here.
What the official profile says about Unohana
Unohana’s history is a sharp contrast to the healing role many viewers associate with her. According to the same official profile, one thousand years earlier she used the name Yachiru, was regarded as Soul Society’s most notorious criminal, and was the first Kenpachi. Yamamoto later discovered her, and she became a member of the squads.

The profile also identifies Unohana as the later captain of Squad 4, whose main duties are medical aid and relief. Her documented arc is therefore not simply a change of name: the fearsome first Kenpachi became associated with the squad responsible for treating and supporting others. The profile establishes that later Squad 4 leadership, but it does not establish her precise founding-era squad assignment.
Why familiar captain lineups are not the founding roster
The Gotei 13’s membership and leadership changed over the course of the story. The official character profiles for captains and squad affiliations include examples of later captains who were displaced after Aizen’s conspiracy and subsequently reinstated, including Shinji Hirako, Rōjūrō Otoribashi, and Kensei Muguruma.

Those later changes matter when reading a roster: a character’s familiar squad, former captaincy, or return to a captain’s seat describes a particular point in the story, not automatically the organization’s founding era. A lineup from the main story—or a later roster—cannot by itself verify who held each original captaincy.
What can and cannot be stated as fact
- Established by the official profiles: Yamamoto founded the Thirteen Court Guard Squads and was their first Head Captain and Squad 1 captain.
- Established by the official profile: Unohana was once Yachiru, the first Kenpachi, and later led Squad 4, whose stated duties include medical aid and relief.
- Not established by these pages: a complete list of all thirteen founding captains, their individual biographies, or every founder’s original squad assignment.
The official anime site is useful for character identities, affiliations, and selected history, but the profiles cited here are not a complete historical roster. A fan-compiled list may offer additional names, but it should not be mistaken for a founder list verified by these particular official pages.

Where to read more
For broader character and story background, VIZ lists Bleach SOULs: Official Character Book, an official book covering information from manga volumes 1–21. VIZ gives its release date as November 18, 2008, and ISBN-13 as 978-1-4215-2053-7. That stated scope makes it a companion for general character background, not proof of a complete account of the founding generation’s thousand-year history.
VIZ’s listing for Bleach, Vol. 13 is a manga-volume listing that discusses captain characters including Kyoraku and Zaraki; it is not presented as a guide to the original captains.
