In that initial account, Carol Garrett said her son had recently gone to an Oklahoma emergency room with intense pain and was diagnosed with shingles. She speculated that he might have self-medicated, but that was her belief at the time, not an established explanation for his death.
What was the reported cause of death?
Later reports published July 13 and 14, 2026, said a summary report from the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the cause as acute fentanyl toxicity and the manner as accidental. TMZ’s July 13 report and ArcaMax’s July 14 report, which cited documents obtained by Us Weekly, attributed the finding to the medical examiner’s report.

Who did Garrett play in How to Eat Fried Worms?
Garrett played Plug, one of the henchmen working for the school bully in the 2006 family comedy. The film follows a boy challenged by a bully to eat worms and is based on Thomas Rockwell’s 1973 children’s book of the same name. The Independent reported that the young cast received the 2007 Young Artist Award for Best Young Ensemble in a Feature Film.

The Independent reported that Garrett began performing in local theater at age eight, including in Aladdin and his Magical Lamp and Peanuts: A Charlie Brown Tribute. At age 10, he toured with Barney’s Colorful World. The publication said he did not appear to continue acting into adulthood; these reported milestones do not constitute a complete credit history.
