Spoilers for Black Phone 2 and the first Black Phone. The Grabber is dead, but the sequel makes his return supernatural: he is a vengeful presence who reaches Gwen through dreams and the black phone. His hold is tied to three boys he murdered at Alpine Lake. Once Gwen and Finney free those boys’ spirits, they help defeat him. The ending also reveals that the Grabber murdered their mother, Hope, and closes with a call that tells Gwen her mother is at peace.
How does Black Phone 2 end?
Gwen’s dreams draw her and Finney to Alpine Lake, where the Grabber once worked at a winter camp. Beneath the frozen lake are the bodies of three boys he murdered years earlier. As the siblings investigate, they learn that their mother, Hope, had psychic abilities like Gwen and discovered the Grabber’s crimes. He killed her and staged her death to look like suicide.
The climax unfolds across the physical world and the dreamlike space where Gwen confronts the Grabber. While the group works to recover the boys’ bodies, Gwen faces him in the dream realm. Freeing the boys releases their spirits from his control; they turn against him and help bring him down. Afterward, Hope reaches Gwen by phone with a message that she is at peace.
How does the Grabber come back?
Finney killed the Grabber in the first film. The sequel does not reveal that he survived: it treats his return as a supernatural threat. After death, the Grabber remains a vengeful entity able to menace Gwen through her dreams and the liminal space connected to the black phone. Peacock’s plot account describes him as going to hell with rage and a desire for revenge, while TIME’s ending explainer describes him drawing power from the lingering fear of his victims.

The film’s supernatural rule is that the boys’ spirits remain trapped and their captivity sustains the Grabber’s power. Recovering their bodies frees them, weakening his hold and allowing them to fight back. This is the movie’s ghost-story mechanism, not a scientific or psychological account of how the dead work.
What does the Grabber want?
His immediate target is Finney: the Grabber wants revenge on the boy who killed him. The sequel also connects his rage to the death of his brother Max, whom the Grabber killed while trying to kill Finney. Separately, the three boys at the camp are the source of his supernatural strength. The ending resolves that threat by freeing the victims, not by redeeming or persuading the Grabber.

What happened to Finney and Gwen’s mother?
Hope did not die by suicide. She had psychic abilities and learned about the Grabber’s murders; he killed her and disguised the murder as suicide. This makes the Alpine Lake mystery part of the siblings’ family history, rather than a separate series of crimes they happen to uncover. TheWrap’s interview with director and co-writer Scott Derrickson identifies Hope’s connection to the Grabber’s early crimes as part of the film’s mystery. TIME describes her murder as the twist that gives the story its emotional center.
What does Hope’s final call mean?
Hope’s call tells Gwen that her mother is at peace and brings their emotional story to a close. A grounded interpretation is that Gwen’s visions connect her to the dead, but the ending lets her see that ability as more than a burden. The message supports that reading; broader symbolic claims about what Gwen’s gift means are interpretation, not a rule the film spells out.

Does the film explain why the Grabber is evil?
No. Derrickson describes the sequel as drawing on traditional ghost-story ideas: murdered victims who are not at rest and a vengeful ghost responsible for their deaths. He told TheWrap, “But it’s not an explanation for The Grabber’s evil. It’s not a psychological explanation for, Oh, here’s why The Grabber was the way he was.” The movie gives the audience supernatural rules for the Grabber’s return and defeat, but it does not offer a psychological backstory to explain or excuse his cruelty. GamesRadar also reported Derrickson’s comments on the character’s backstory.
