‘Black Panther’ Is Amazing. Why Do Some CG Shots Look So Unconvincing?

Engadget criticized specific Black Panther effects shots, not the film’s CG as a whole. Production accounts detail the scale and methods of the work, but do not identify a single cause for those moments’ artificiality.

Black Panther is widely admired for its world-building and action, but a few effects shots drew pointed criticism. The question is not whether all of the film’s computer-generated imagery is “terrible”; it is why particular moments—especially a car-flip shot and a falling fight between two digital characters—can look artificial beside the movie’s strengths.

Which shots prompted the criticism?

Engadget’s 2018 critique focused on specific moments: Black Panther flipping over a crashing car, and two computer-generated characters punching one another as they fall. Those examples describe that article’s reaction, not a measured audience consensus or a finding that the film’s effects are uniformly weak. Engadget’s critique and examples

That distinction matters because “CG models” can suggest a problem with the digital characters themselves. A shot’s realism, however, is an overall impression: the model is only one part of what a viewer sees.

Why can a CG action shot feel fake?

Viewers often judge a fast-moving shot through cues such as weight, timing, contact, and how well the digital subject sits within the photographed scene. If a flip or punch does not seem to carry convincing force, or if a figure appears disconnected from its surroundings, the image may read as artificial even when the underlying model is detailed. These are useful ways to analyze the cited shots, not established diagnoses of how either one was made.

Black Panther / Wakanda Forever: 2-Movie Collection [Blu-ray]
  • The complete 2-movie saga of Marvel Studios' Black Panther.
  • Motion and weight: Does the character’s movement seem to respond to momentum and gravity?
  • Contact: Do the impacts and interactions appear to connect, with force that reads clearly?
  • Integration: Does the digital figure appear to belong in the scene’s lighting, camera movement, and environment?
  • Emphasis: Does the shot make the action easy to follow, or does its visual focus call attention to the effect?

The available production accounts do not provide a shot-by-shot technical examination of the car flip or falling fight. They do not establish whether animation, lighting, compositing, camera matching, rendering, or revisions caused those moments to feel unconvincing. Assigning one of those explanations to either example would go beyond what the sources show.

What the production accounts do establish

The film’s digital work was extensive and distributed across vendors. Computer Graphics World reported 12 primary visual-effects vendors—a count of primary vendors, not every company or subcontractor that contributed. Its production account describes work on city environments, fight reconstruction, a car chase, destruction, full-CG builds, a CG Panther in a virtual environment, and cloth simulation. Luma Pictures’ supervisors described scanning digital doubles and substantial CG reconstruction for a car chase, as well as simulation work on the Panther suit. They also explained the creative aim: “It was important to the both of them that the visual effects felt grounded in reality and—first and foremost— that the VFX tell the story and have weight, both visually and emotionally.” That is a vendor’s account of the production goal, not an independent verdict on whether every shot achieved it. How the suits became digital effects

Production coverage says artists modified photogrammetry models to create the characters’ superhuman physiques and used CG replacement suits. Luma visual-effects supervisor Brendan Seals described a cloth-simulation method: “We flattened the suit like laying out clothing on a bed, converted the texture set to a set of curves, and the curves became goal paths for the simulation.” The account describes one part of the suit workflow; it does not identify that work as the cause of the criticism of the car flip or falling fight. Why a demanding workflow is not a complete explanation

A large, technically involved production helps explain what the effects teams had to build, but it does not by itself explain why a particular image succeeds or fails for an individual viewer. The reporting documents ambitious environment and action work, digital doubles, suit replacements, and simulation. It does not substantiate claims that a rushed schedule, poor modeling, or a company-wide cost-cutting decision caused the two criticized shots.

Nor should the film’s digital effects be attributed to a single studio: the reported primary-vendor count and production descriptions point to a multi-vendor effort. A shot-specific conclusion would require evidence about that shot’s creation, rather than an inference from the scale of the overall production.

How the effects relate to Wakanda’s visual design

The film’s designed world and the realism of an individual action shot are related but separate questions. Marvel’s production-design coverage discusses inspirations behind Wakanda’s architecture and world-building; those deliberate visual choices help establish the setting, but they do not settle whether a moving CG character feels convincing in a particular moment. For a closer look at the design process behind the film, Marvel also describes Black Panther: The Art of the Movie as a volume featuring concept art and filmmaker analysis. It offers production-design context, rather than a technical verdict on the disputed effects shots. Marvel’s coverage of the film’s art book

So, why do some of the CG models look terrible?

The most defensible answer is narrower than the headline: some viewers find particular action shots artificial, and Engadget named concrete examples, but the available accounts do not establish a definitive technical cause. Looking closely at motion, weight, contact, integration, and visual emphasis can help explain a viewer’s reaction without mistaking that analysis for a documented production diagnosis.
