Spoilers throughout. The cabin conversation in “White Christmas” is an interrogation: Matt is talking to a digital copy of Joe, and the confession he draws out helps police arrest the real Joe. The ending then turns the episode’s central cruelty back on Matt and Joe’s copy, raising a question about whether a digital copy can be treated as a mere tool.
Why Matt and Joe are in the cabin
The snowy cabin is not an ordinary meeting between two men. Matt is speaking with a “cookie”—a digital copy of Joe—and steering him toward a confession. Joe recounts his relationship with Beth, who blocked him and cut off his access to her. After she died, Joe continued trying to watch her life from a distance, including the life of their child.

Joe admits that when the child was in danger, he watched and did not intervene. That confession gives the police a way to arrest the real Joe. The cabin scenes therefore serve both as the episode’s apparent frame story and as evidence-gathering.
How the three stories connect
The special interweaves three stories. Its first two strands establish Matt’s experience manipulating access and digital copies before the cabin’s purpose becomes clear.

Matt’s dating-coaching scheme
Matt helps Harry approach a woman at a party, using an eye-linked view and real-time coaching. The scheme ends in violence. Matt later takes part in a cover-up and is prosecuted.
Greta’s cookie
Matt explains how a cookie copy can be made to run a home through commands. Greta’s copy resists being forced into service, and Matt uses psychological coercion to make it comply. This story shows how readily he treats a digital copy as something to control.
Rank #2
Joe’s confession
Joe’s account of Beth and their child supplies the crime the cabin conversation is designed to expose. The earlier stories are not unrelated detours: they establish Matt’s methods and prepare the reveal that he is using those methods on Joe’s copy.
What happens to Matt and Joe’s cookie
After Joe’s confession, police use it against the real Joe. Matt also faces consequences for his part in the earlier crime and for his manipulation of Greta’s cookie. The ending does not make their outcomes equivalent: Joe’s copy is left in the cabin, while Matt is punished for his own actions.

The authorities leave Joe’s cookie trapped in a repeating Christmas scene, with the music and distress continuing in an accelerated experience. The episode’s plot establishes the loop, but a specific duration or playback multiplier is not established here and should not be assumed.
What the ending means
On the thriller level, the reveal explains why Matt kept pressing Joe to talk: the conversation was an interrogation intended to obtain evidence. On the ethical level, the final scene echoes Matt’s treatment of Greta’s cookie. The authorities use a digital copy as an instrument and subject it to suffering, inviting viewers to ask whether a copy that appears conscious has moral standing.

That ethical reading follows from what the episode depicts; it is an interpretation, not a confirmed statement of creator intent. The story leaves the question unresolved rather than offering a rule for how digital consciousness should be treated.

“White Christmas” is a standalone, feature-length Christmas special built from three interwoven stories of techno-paranoia. In Channel 4’s 2014 announcement, Charlie Brooker said the aim was to create the Black Mirror equivalent of the 1970s Amicus compendium horror films he enjoyed. Read Channel 4’s announcement. It is an anthology episode, so viewers do not need to treat the cabin story as a continuation of another episode’s plot.
