Major spoilers for “Eulogy,” Season 7 of Black Mirror. Paul Giamatti sees the ending as bittersweet but hopeful: Phillip finally remembers Carol as a person rather than as the villain in his own version of their breakup. The episode gives him that emotional clarity, but it does not show whether he and Carol’s daughter, Kelly, reconnect.
What happens at the end of “Eulogy”?
Phillip enters a memorial program that uses photographs as immersive memory spaces, hoping to contribute memories of Carol, his former partner. Guided through the images, he revisits their relationship and the painful story he has carried about why it ended. The fictional program is described as able to process up to 1,500 photos, with at least six recommended; Phillip begins with three Polaroids, and the Guide helps him explore them.

Those scenes do not simply reproduce an objective past. The Guide questions Phillip’s recollections, and he admits that he exaggerated some memories. He had also scratched or marked Carol’s face out of the photographs. What emerges is that his version of the breakup has protected him from confronting what Carol was going through.
Why does Carol’s letter change Phillip’s understanding?
Phillip finds Carol’s old letter, which he missed after his drunken attempt to propose. Carol was pregnant with Kelly and had invited him to meet her after her performance. In the moment, Phillip was too drunk and angry to notice the note. Its discovery recasts the failed proposal: what he remembered as a rejection was also a chance to meet that he never understood he had been given.

The letter does not erase the hurt or make the past simple. It does, however, expose how much Phillip’s memory has left out. Charlie Brooker, the episode’s creator and co-writer, said Phillip has “realized that he made her into a villain in his head.” Brooker’s reading is that Phillip comes to understand more of Carol’s experience and falls in love with her again, a painful recognition because she is gone.
How does the cello recording lead to the final scene?
After hearing Carol play cello on a cassette, Phillip can finally remember her face. This is an emotional recognition, not a reunion: Carol is dead, and Phillip attends her funeral. The ending gives him a fuller memory of her and a chance to release the false account he has built around their separation.

Giamatti told TheWrap on April 11, 2025: “I don’t know if it’s happy, but I think he ends up better — it’s a better ending than it could have been.” He described the discovery as a painful misunderstanding that lets Phillip understand and let go; Carol, he noted, did not need his forgiveness.
What does Kelly’s final glance mean?
After the funeral, Phillip and Kelly share a silent glance. The episode does not establish whether Kelly is literally there in that moment or whether the encounter is connected to the Eulogy technology. Giamatti said, “There’s something ambiguous about [Kelly] nodding to me.” He has speculated that Phillip might introduce himself, but that possibility is not shown as fact.

The distinction is central to the close: Phillip’s change is clear, while the prospect of a relationship with Kelly remains unresolved. The final look can suggest a path back toward the living world without promising that it will happen.

In an April 14, 2025 interview with the Television Academy, Giamatti said the photo sequences were staged practically: performers were physically present and held still, with selected marks and other details added digitally. The approach gives the memories a still-image quality while allowing Phillip to move through them.

The episode’s compassionate note is not that technology fixes grief or makes memory reliable. Rather, its memorial system gives Phillip a way to revisit what he has avoided—and to see the limits of the story he told himself. Patsy Ferran, who plays the Guide, put the humane theme this way: “We make mistakes, we just have to be more compassionate toward ourselves and toward others.”
