Phillip goes to Carol’s funeral after discovering that his memories had turned her into a villain and hidden the context of their final encounter. Carol’s letter reveals she was pregnant and wanted to see him again; a cassette of her cello playing helps him reconnect with her face and memory. Kelly’s silent glance at the funeral is left ambiguous.
What happens in “Eulogy”
Phillip (Paul Giamatti), withdrawn and isolated, is contacted by Kelly Royce (Patsy Ferran) after her mother, Carol—Phillip’s former girlfriend—dies. Kelly’s family wants Phillip’s memories for a memorial. The fictional Eulogy system lets people enter old photographs while compiling one. Netflix Tudum says the system can process up to 1,500 photos and recommends at least six; those are specifications for the story’s fictional technology, not a real product or real-world statistic. Phillip brings only three Polaroids from a box he has kept hidden. (Netflix Tudum, April 15, 2025)

An AI-generated Guide, adapted from Kelly’s memories, accompanies Phillip through the images. He has scratched Carol’s face from his photographs and cannot initially remember what she looked like. As he tells the story of their relationship, he casts Carol as the one who repeatedly hurt him. The Guide challenges his account, including his memory of a Halloween party: Phillip thought Carol chose to spend the night with a man dressed as the Devil, but the image suggests she was trying to get away from him. Phillip admits he exaggerated.
Other memories reveal Phillip’s own part in their breakup. Carol took a job in the orchestra pit for The Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End after a serious fight. Phillip had cheated with his co-worker Emma, and he and Carol argued about it by phone. Later, he flew to London intending to propose at a restaurant. He remembers Carol as quiet and rejecting; after proposing, he angrily demanded an answer as she left.

What was in Carol’s letter?
The Guide supplies context Phillip did not have: Carol was pregnant after a one-night stand and had written him a letter. Drunk and angry, Phillip failed to notice it on the hotel-room floor and left without reading it. The letter is still among his belongings in the present.
In it, Carol writes that she had slept with a colleague because she was angry about Phillip and Emma. She invites him to meet her after her matinee the next day and says she will understand if he does not want to see her. Phillip reads the letter, then listens to a cassette recording of Carol playing cello. The sound helps restore her face in an old photograph.

Why does Phillip go to Carol’s funeral?
Finding the letter and hearing the cassette change how Phillip sees Carol and their past. He does not learn that she was blameless, or that their relationship could have ended happily. He realizes that grief and resentment narrowed his account of her and that he failed to see what she was going through. Charlie Brooker described Phillip’s realization as understanding that he “made her into a villain in his head.”
Brooker also said Phillip “has fallen in love with her again at the end, which is bittersweet because she’s gone.” That recognition—not a chance to repair the past—is what leads Phillip to attend the funeral.

What does Kelly’s glance mean?
At the funeral, Phillip and Kelly exchange a silent glance. The episode does not explain whether Kelly’s nod is ordinary recognition, a response to the memorial experience, or something more. Paul Giamatti said, “There’s something ambiguous about [Kelly] nodding to me.” The moment is open-ended: it does not establish that Kelly literally shares Phillip’s immersive memories.
Why do the photographs, letter, and cassette matter?
The episode makes memory tangible through objects. Phillip’s scratched photographs conceal Carol’s face; her letter preserves a message he failed to receive; and the cello cassette gives him a way back into a memory that had become inaccessible. The emotional turn comes not from the technology proving his version right, but from the artifacts making it possible to question that version.

Brooker connected the story to his experience preparing a eulogy for his father and looking for photographs. He said older pictures can feel evocative partly because there are fewer of them and they are imperfect, and that angrily scrubbing someone’s face from a photograph destroys a precious artifact. These comments describe the story’s inspiration, not evidence that real memory technology works like Eulogy. Netflix Tudum also reports that Brooker and co-writer Ella Road drew inspiration from Peter Jackson’s 2021 docuseries The Beatles: Get Back, which used technology to enhance images and extract John Lennon’s vocals.

Phillip’s late change of heart does not undo his choices or restore the relationship. It does let him recognize that his memories were partial and that he had reduced Carol to the role of the person who hurt him. The funeral glance leaves a final question unanswered, while Phillip’s decision to attend makes his own recognition plain. As Patsy Ferran put it, “We make mistakes, we just have to be more compassionate toward ourselves and toward others.”
