Plaything is connected to Bandersnatch, but it is not a direct sequel. Creator Charlie Brooker describes the Season 7 episode as sharing “some DNA” with the interactive film: it brings back characters Colin Ritman and Mohan Thakur and revisits some themes, without establishing a single, fixed Black Mirror chronology.
Is ‘Plaything’ a ‘Bandersnatch’ sequel?
No—not in the conventional sense. In a Netflix Tudum Season 7 Q&A, Brooker said the episode “isn’t actually a sequel, but it shares some DNA” with Bandersnatch. British GQ likewise recorded his description of it as not technically a sequel, while noting that it carries over characters from the interactive film (British GQ interview).

That distinction matters: Plaything includes recognizable links to the earlier story, but Brooker’s comments do not describe it as a continuation that resolves Bandersnatch’s branching endings or establishes one canonical timeline.
Why did Brooker bring Colin and Mohan back?
Brooker said the idea began with the story he wanted to tell in Plaything: a tale spanning the 1990s and the present, centered on a video game, with a scene in which a character meets a brilliant programmer. He remembered Colin Ritman and Mohan Thakur, the software-company characters played by Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry in Bandersnatch, and liked them enough to bring them into that scene.

#1 Best Overall
In the Tudum Q&A, Brooker said he wanted to “riff on some of the themes we had in ‘Bandersnatch’ but in a different way.” TheWrap also reported that Colin came to mind as Brooker developed the episode’s video-game and AI ideas, rather than as part of a pre-planned sequel (TheWrap interview).
How can Colin return if he dies in ‘Bandersnatch’?
Bandersnatch is an interactive film with multiple endings, so Colin’s fate depends on the path taken. Brooker acknowledged that returning a character who dies in some possible timelines creates a continuity question. His answer was character-specific and deliberately loose: Colin “kind of seems to know that he lives outside of time and space,” which made it feel easy to bring him back.

Brooker also cautioned against treating Black Mirror as a neatly ordered chronology, joking in the same Tudum Q&A that viewers could try to construct one but that it would be difficult. His explanation supports a playful crossover, not a definitive rule that reconciles every ending.
What are the visible links between the stories?
Returning Tuckersoft characters
Colin and Mohan are the clearest connection: both return from Bandersnatch, where they are associated with Tuckersoft. Their presence is a direct character crossover, even though Brooker rejects the label of direct sequel.

The Bandersnatch novel
Netflix’s Season 7 Easter-egg guide identifies the Bandersnatch book as the choose-your-own-adventure novel that inspired the interactive film, and notes that Colin owns a copy in “Plaything.” Netflix also points to the book in “Hotel Reverie,” “Eulogy,” and “Common People.” It is a recurring visual thread across the season, not proof by itself that those episodes form one continuous plot.
A shared director
Executive producer Jessica Rhoades noted that David Slade directed both Bandersnatch and “Plaything.” That is a production connection, alongside Slade’s work on “Metalhead,” rather than evidence of a particular in-story timeline.

Does ‘Plaything’ establish a shared ‘Black Mirror’ universe?
It invites that reading, but the evidence is best described as a loose connection. Brooker’s own phrasing—shared DNA, not a sequel—fits the returning characters and thematic echoes. The recurring book prop adds another link across Season 7, but neither it nor Colin’s return settles which Bandersnatch ending should count as canonical.
Netflix lists Black Mirror: Bandersnatch as a 2018 title and describes its premise as a young programmer adapting a dark fantasy novel into a video game, with multiple endings (Netflix title page). That listing does not establish current availability or interactive playback in every country.

Do you need to watch ‘Bandersnatch’ first?
Brooker’s comments do not make a required viewing order part of the connection: he describes Plaything as its own story, with familiar characters and themes returning in a different way. Watching Bandersnatch first can make the character and book references easier to recognize, but the crossover should not be mistaken for a plot that depends on one chosen ending.
What about the real ‘Thronglets’ game?
The game featured in the fiction also crossed into the real world. Netflix announced a mobile game called Thronglets, made by Night School and described as set in the same universe as Bandersnatch, with access exclusive to Netflix members beginning April 10, 2025 (Netflix announcement). That dated announcement does not confirm whether the game remains accessible now.
