When those notes are displayed as conventional notation, the page can look nearly black—hence the name. That visual density does not necessarily translate into an indistinguishable wall of sound: rapid runs and chords may form a surprisingly coherent, synthetic texture.
What is Black MIDI?
Black MIDI is a style of composition or remix built around MIDI files containing very large numbers of notes. MIDI represents musical events, including pitches and timing; a visual score of a densely populated arrangement can crowd notes together until the page resembles a dark mass.
The name refers to that appearance. In Elliot Williams’s 2015 Hackaday article, the black-looking score is the joke behind “Black MIDI,” not a rule that every score is literally black or impossible to read. Williams’s article presents the title’s “There Is No Denser Music” as a playful flourish, not a measured claim that Black MIDI is objectively denser than every other kind of music.
What does Black MIDI sound like?
A score may look like a blur, but the sound need not register as one. Williams describes fast arpeggios and dense chords that can produce a coherent, almost synthetic texture, with a chiptune-like quality. That is his listening characterization, not a universal response or a technical definition of the genre.

- 96-page wirebound book
- 12 staves per page
- Music Notation Guide.
The contrast is the point: conventional notation makes the sheer note density visible, while listening can reveal rapid patterns and layered tones. The visual impression alone does not tell you whether a particular piece will sound chaotic, melodic, or both.
Where did Black MIDI begin?
A secondary overview reports early examples appearing online in Japan around 2009, followed by broader spread to other countries in the early 2010s. It also describes later works with note counts in the millions. Those accounts offer broad context, but they do not establish a definitive first composition or a single uncontested origin. See the Black MIDI overview for that reported history.
